Career

Banfield’s journalism career began in 1988 at CJBN-TV in Kenora, Ontario, before she joined CKY-TV in Winnipeg later that year. From 1989 to 1992, she anchored the weekend news at CFRN-TV in Edmonton. She then moved to CICT-TV in Calgary, serving as a producer from 1992 to 1993, and later as a business correspondent and evening news anchor from 1993 to 1995. During her time there, she was awarded two Iris Awards and worked as a freelance associate producer for ABC’s “World News Tonight,” covering significant events such as the 1991 Bush/Gorbachev and 1993 Clinton/Yeltsin Summits. In the mid-’90s, Banfield took her talents to KDFW in Texas, where she hosted “News 4 Texas Daybreak” and co-hosted “News 4 Texas” alongside Steve Eager. Her exceptional work won her an Emmy, leading to her recruitment by MSNBC. At MSNBC, she hosted “MSNBC Investigates” and co-hosted “Homepage” with Mika Brzezinski and Gina Gaston, while also working with NBC. Banfield’s career saw another shift in early 2012 when she joined CNN to co-anchor “Early Start,” followed by roles on “CNN Newsroom” and “Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield.” She transitioned to HLN in October 2014 to host “Primetime Justice with Ashleigh Banfield,” later renamed “Crime & Justice with Ashleigh Banfield.” Following a layoff in 2018 due to HLN’s programming changes, she hosted “Live Rescue” on A&E. Personal Life

Banfield’s personal life includes her marriage to Howard Gould, a real estate financier and founder of Equator Environmental, on July 24, 2004, aboard a yacht at Canada’s Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. The couple, who had two sons named Ridley and Jay, divorced in 2012. On her 50th birthday in 2017, she married sales executive Chris Haynor at Vermont’s Hermitage Club ski lodge after a three-year courtship. In 2008, Ashleigh became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
