What is Bob Gale’s Net Worth?
Bob Gale, an accomplished American screenwriter, film producer, director, and comic book writer, boasts an impressive net worth of $60 million. He gained fame for co-writing and co-producing the iconic “Back to the Future” film trilogy alongside Robert Zemeckis. In the realm of comic books, Gale has contributed to both DC Comics and Marvel Comics, including notable works in the Batman and Spider-Man series.
Early Life and Education
Born on May 25, 1951, in University City, Missouri, Gale was raised by Maxine, an art dealer and violinist, and Mark, a lawyer who later became a city councilman. He grew up with two younger brothers, Charlie and Randy. Gale pursued higher education at the University of Southern California, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in film in 1973.
Film Career
Gale’s screenwriting debut was the 1978 period comedy “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” co-written with director Robert Zemeckis. The film follows a group of teenagers attempting to see the Beatles during their historic “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance in 1964. This project marked the beginning of a successful collaboration between Gale and Zemeckis, leading to the co-writing of the 1979 war comedy “1941,” directed by Steven Spielberg. They also collaborated on the 1980 black comedy “Used Cars,” directed by Zemeckis and produced by Gale, about a crafty used-car salesman in a competitive rivalry. Their most significant success came with the 1985 science-fiction hit “Back to the Future,” which became the year’s highest-grossing film and earned them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This success paved the way for its sequels, “Back to the Future Part II” (1989) and “Back to the Future Part III” (1990).
After wrapping up the “Back to the Future” trilogy, Gale and Zemeckis teamed up for the crime thriller “Trespass,” which hit theaters in 1992 but struggled at the box office. In 1995, Gale ventured into directing with the innovative theatrical short “Mr. Payback: An Interactive Movie,” a science-fiction comedy that featured audience participation through joysticks. Following this, Gale and Zemeckis received story credits for the 1996 horror comedy “Bordello of Blood,” an idea they had conceived in the 1970s. Returning to the director’s chair, Gale released “Interstate 60” in 2002, a road movie he wrote and co-produced, starring James Marsden, Gary Oldman, Amy Smart, Chris Cooper, and Christopher Lloyd.

Comic Books
Gale’s passion for comic books began in his youth, particularly with Marvel, leading him to create his own comics, including “The Green Vomit,” and co-found a comic book club in St. Louis. He turned professional in the late 1990s, beginning with Batman issues for DC Comics. By the early 2000s, he was writing for Marvel, starting with the one-shot “Ant-Man’s Big Christmas,” co-written with Phil Winslade. Gale continued with “Daredevil” comics and, from 2008 to 2011, contributed to the “Amazing Spider-Man” series. In 2015, he launched a monthly “Back to the Future” comic book series for IDW Publishing.
Other Work
Beyond screenwriting and comics, Gale also ventured into novelizations, publishing a novel version of “1941” to accompany the film’s 1979 release. He co-created the animated series “Back to the Future” for CBS in the early 1990s, based on the film trilogy. After the series ended, Gale wrote and directed a 1993 episode of HBO’s horror anthology “Tales from the Crypt.” Two decades later, he published “Retribution High,” a novel based on an unproduced screenplay.
