Jon Sumrall has carved out an impressive reputation among Group of Five coaches, boasting a remarkable 42-11 record over four seasons. During his two-year tenure at Troy, he guided the team to two Sun Belt championships. After moving to Tulane in 2024, Sumrall continued his winning ways by steering the Green Wave to the American Conference championship game in both of his seasons there.
His achievements did not go unnoticed. The Florida Gators have now secured Sumrall’s expertise, offering him a lucrative contract to lead their program in Gainesville.
Florida and Sumrall have agreed on a six-year deal valued at $44.7 million, which will pay him nearly $7.5 million annually. This contract also includes incentives tied to reaching the College Football Playoff. Previously earning $3 million a year at Tulane, this new agreement marks a 150% salary increase for Sumrall.

The Gators are in need of a fresh start after a disappointing 4-8 season, which led to the dismissal of former head coach Billy Napier on October 19. Since then, interim coach Billy Gonzales has been at the helm.
In his official statement, Sumrall acknowledged the high expectations that accompany the Florida role, emphasizing the program’s comprehensive resources, storied tradition, and the fervent support of Gator Nation as essential elements for success at the highest level.
Sumrall also highlighted the importance of building a strong support system, particularly in light of Florida’s inconsistent offensive performance this past season. “One of my top priorities will be to assemble an exceptional coaching staff,” he stated, “including an offensive coordinator who understands that at Florida, an explosive offense is not just preferred—it’s essential.”
The Green Wave are 10-2 this season and will face off against North Texas in the American Conference championship game. Tulane is allowing Sumrall to coach that title game; if the school is invited to the College Football Playoff, Sumrall will also continue coaching throughout the playoff.
In a statement announcing the news, Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin called Sumrall “a proven winner and an exceptional leader.” If Tulane can win the American title, it’s possible he’ll be coming off a College Football Playoff appearance. That will only bring more excitement to Florida fans, who are already looking forward to 2026.
