The saga kicked off on October 26 when LSU decided to part ways with Brian Kelly. In response, Kelly initiated legal action to ensure he receives the entirety of his $54 million buyout. After weeks of tense negotiations, LSU formally issued a notice of termination on November 21, leaving both parties to sort out the final buyout terms.
Amidst this turmoil, LSU finds itself on the hunt for a new head coach. Reports suggest the university is gearing up to extend a lucrative offer to Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, potentially exceeding $90 million, a deal that would catapult Kiffin to the top of the pay scale in college football. Factoring in an additional $25 million for name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreements and between $10 to $20 million for assistant coach salaries, LSU’s financial commitment could skyrocket to an all-encompassing $180 to $190 million for its football program.

These figures represent just a portion of the investment, as LSU also faces expenses related to stadium upkeep and enhancements to training facilities and weight rooms. Additionally, the university may owe a buyout fee to Ole Miss. Such financial outlays highlight LSU’s determination to revive its storied football legacy.
Historically, LSU has been a powerhouse in college football, with three national championship appearances since 2007, winning two. The Tigers have achieved 10 or more victories in 14 seasons since 2000, establishing themselves as a formidable force. Both the institution and its fervent fanbase are eager for a return to form, willing to invest significantly to achieve it.
As for Kiffin, while he has yet to accept the offer, the prevailing consensus suggests he may soon depart Ole Miss to seize this opportunity. LSU, with pen in hand, is poised to make this substantial investment in its athletic future.
