Andre Onana has been pictured arriving back at Carrington as the Cameroonian goalkeeper brings an end to what has been a hectic 17-day period for both club and country.

It comes amid a trying first campaign for the former Ajax and Inter Milan stopper, in which he has repeatedly come in for criticism for his performances.

He has kept only nine clean sheets in 31 games, and has made a number of high-profile mistakes, particularly in the Champions League against Galatasaray.

Onana’s participation at AFCON caught the headlines after it emerged he would only be joining up with his side at the last minute after playing in United’s clash with Tottenham on January 14.

The summer signing was then flown to Ivory Coast on January 15 for his side’s first group game of the competition against Guinea on that same day via a private jet.

Foggy conditions, however, provided another twist, as he was unable to land in Yamoussoukro – where Cameroon were kicking off their Group C campaign – and had to divert to Abidjan before completing his 3,300 mile journey.

He was then seen fuming after being duly snubbed for that game by boss Rigobert Song, with former Senegal star El Hadji Diouf called upon to calm down the Man United stopper.

After Guinea, which ended 1-1, came the biggest clash of the group stage – reigning African champions Senegal on January 19, spear-headed by Sadio Mane.

Yet it turned out to be a game that Onana will remember for all the wrong reasons. His side conceded three goals, and the man between the sticks failed to save a single shot on target in 90 minutes.

The following match, an absolute thriller against Gambia that ended 3-2 on January 23, saw Onana incredibly dropped despite the efforts taken to get him to the tournament, with Fabrice Ondoa taking his place back from the opener.

Ondoa was again handed the gloves in the ensuing last-16 clash four days later with giants Nigeria, but after the Indomitable Lions fell to an Ademola Lookman double, Cameroon – the five-time winners – crashed out.

That heart-breaking defeat came on Saturday January 27, before flying back on Monday January 29, taking his air miles beyond the 6,000 mark in the process of ultimately playing just the one game.

He was then spotted arriving at Carrington on Wednesday, meaning he has had just three days off before reporting back to his club in the hope of wresting the gloves back of Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir had replaced him temporarily for the FA Cup fourth round clash with Newport, although it was not quite the debut he will have wanted, conceding two in a performance that won’t exactly be plaguing Onana’s nightmares.

Now since travelling home after Cameroon’s AFCON exit, Mail Sport have reported that the player is considering a second international retirement in three years.

Onana’s return to the UK on Monday, and subsequent return to training on Wednesday, means that he will likely be in the squad to face Wolves on Thursday in the Premier League
