Early Life and Education
Umberto Rispoli was born on August 31, 1988 in San Severino Marche, Italy to parents originally from Naples. He was raised in suburban Naples, in Scampia. In 2002, Rispoli moved to Cisterna di Latina to work in the stable of champion jockey Luigi Camici. He went on to attend the Italian Racing School in Pisa and received his jockey license in 2004.
Jockeying Career
Rispoli made his professional debut as a jockey in early 2005 in Varese, riding Polar Eagle. He came in second place in the race. A little later, riding Pace Maker, Rispoli claimed his first win. Overall, in his first year, he rode 82 winners. Rispoli had his greatest career year yet in 2009, when he broke Gianfranco Dettori’s Italian record for winners in a single year, with 245. He was subsequently named the year’s Italian Champion Jockey. Rispoli earned that title again in 2010, a year that saw him claim his first major win: the Premio Lydia Tesio. He won two more major races in 2011: the Premio Presidente della Repubblica in Italy and the Takamatsunomiya Kinen in Japan. Rispoli moved to France in 2012, and won the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp. Earlier that year, he had won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong. Rispoli spent five seasons in France between 2012 and 2016, with his only other major French win being the 2014 Critérium International. Meanwhile, in Italy, he won the 2013 Premio Gran Criterium and the 2015 Premio Presidente della Repubblica.

After his time in France, Rispoli moved to Hong Kong and joined the prestigious Hong Kong Jockey Club. He stayed there until the end of 2019, when he moved to Southern California. Rispoli went on to have great success at Santa Anita Park, winning his first race, the Santa Anita Derby, in 2021. A month after that, he won the Shoemaker Mile Stakes. Later in the year, Rispoli won the Rodeo Drive Stakes. He won the Rodeo Drive Stakes again in 2022, a year that also saw him claim the Gamely Stakes. By the summer of 2022, Rispoli had won almost 300 career races and earned over $21 million in purses. His success in major races waned after that year, with his next major win, the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes, not coming until 2025.
