PERSONAL STATEMENT.

I have an educational background in Shipping and Transport and was interested in this field when I worked for a transport company during my A-Level vacation for 6 months. I went on to study Customs Clearing and Forwarding, International Trade to mention but a few upon completion I worked with a large coffee exporting company as Declaration Officer-in-charge of preparation of all required paperwork to facilitate the export of goods.

I came to the U.K. in 2001 to study a Higher National Diploma Qualification in Shipping and Transport at the London City College Shiller International University. Upon completion, I pursued other studies in Computing.  Choosing to study transport at the Metropolitan University will render me eligible to pursue a career path in this industry which has been my greatest wish and attaining the qualification will allow me to deliver in the working environment competitively.

Am knowledgeable as well as open to learning new things intellectually, I would also like to develop my critical skills like communication and other character skills. Currently am working part-time as a carer which is challenging and the same time rewarding too. I have also worked in different supporting roles as a Learning Support Assistant which also was a very demanding role requiring much patience and this I have developed as I believe it is an admirable trait in any profession.

At the end of the day studying for the Bachelor’s degree will be a big challenge that I hope to achieve success. I hope to see and learn new things during the study of my course and through my experiences that have taught me, you’ve got to love what you are doing, I believe in going an extra mile, and I will be willing to that distance to make my dreams come true. The challenge that I would face would relate to my personal career development which I want to utilise by a strong academic background (BA TRANSPORT). Studying at Metropolitan University will be the first step that I want to do. My future career plans are to work in the management consulting and policy framework design and implementation.

I am experienced given my years of working in both the public and private sector as the private sector experience included business, farming and working in groups and will use this experience to help the people productively to help improve working independently. I am the most significant uniting factor given the highly polarised nature of politics. I will be able to bring together all the people and given my years of Service with the Government. I will be able to capitalise on my networks with the I am here to build transformative policies that come together for a good cause and transform the productive energies into consulting problems. My experience focused on the issues of development, and recognise the vital role of effective delivery working with government and partners, This empowered me with skills that will enable me to engage in meaningful employment and to protect both public and private roles concerning time and improvement of service delivery to ensure the regularities through liaison and using my useful contacts in the appropriate avenues.

Scouting Background

In my Primary 4, I joined the SCOUTING CLUB as a Cub Scout, to pass through the test; I needed to know how Cub Scouting Started in Uganda as it is entrenched within the Uganda Scout Association’s constitution to cater for children within the age bracket of 6- 11 years as a section commissioned into activity-oriented full of fun and enjoyment. Most of the activities as anyone can remember since the cub scouts join the pride at the age of about 8 years by the time the Cub Scout turns up to 11 plus years, he should have been trained up to gaining the lion badge. The scheme entails several topics which are relevant to Ugandan cub scouts needs and upbringing including the cultural norms and character building such as topics in Education, Scouting and its scout crafts religious topics, health topics to include nutrition and agriculture, sanitation and disease control, environment and Leadership, patriotism and self-reliance.

Becoming a Cub Scout depends on the willingness and zeal to offer services voluntarily by enjoying the benefits the Uganda scouts and trained for the Simba after undergoing the basic cub scouts training known as Simba Scout Course and getting the Cub Scout Wood badge Training Course (S.W.C.) It gave me a fantastic opportunity to do lots of activities and things that people who are not in Scouts don’t get to do. It’s about having fun with good friends.’

Scouts aim to build and develop young people’s confidence, sense of adventure and outdoor skills, as well as encouraging them to explore their beliefs and attitudes and be creative.  It offers them the independence to put these skills into practice at camps, and even on international trips scouts are encouraged to work together and take the lead on all sorts of projects, from community-based work to planning games and activities for their meetings.

In my O-level, I joined the Scout Troop a Section is for young people aged between 10 and 14 years.

A Scout Troop is divided into small groups called Patrols, each headed up by an older Scout called a Patrol Leader, and often with an Assistant Patrol Leader.

Activities

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme including traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking, as well as a broader spectrum of adventurous activities, from abseiling to zorbing. Participation rather than meeting set standards is the critical approach, and there are several badges and awards that Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements. Tribute to A Scout leader refers to the trained adult leader of a Scout unit. The terms used vary from the country.

I participated in the World Scout Jamboree 2nd All-Africa Jamboree Kaazi Uganda 1989.

The Africa Scout Jamboree is the most significant regular event organised by the Africa Scout Region, gathering thousands of young people from all over Africa and the world. It is, above all an educational event to promote peace and understanding. The Africa Scout Jamboree includes a wide variety of activities and also places great importance on everyday life and interaction on the campsite

The World Scout Jamboree is the most significant regular event organised by the Scout Movement, gathering up to 40 000 people from all over the world. It is, above all an educational event to promote peace and understanding. The World Scout Jamboree includes a wide variety of activities and also places great importance on everyday life and interaction on the campsite. Participants must be 14-17 years old at the time of the event. If you are 18 or older, you can take part as an International Service Team (I.S.T., volunteer staff). The World Scout Jamboree takes place every four years in a different country. There are various roles a leader can fulfil, depending on the type of unit. Positions are usually voluntary. Uniformed Scout Leaders are primarily responsible for organising the activities of the group, and training the youth members through the Scout program. Scout leaders participate in a series of training courses, typically aiming for the Wood Badge as the primary qualification of an adult leader in Scouting. Scout Leaders are given a formal appointment called a warrant

Cub Scout

I was to begin discovering the world when I joined the Scout club, making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are. Alongside your new friends, mastering the skills that will help you weather the storms of life, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school – working with trained volunteers to achieve whatever you set your mind. Scouts start small but think big. They stand up for what they believe in and make a difference on their doorstops, confident in the knowledge that their daily actions add up. In a society that can often feel increasingly isolated and inward-facing, Scouts build bridges and break barriers. Throughout history, they’ve played all sorts of useful roles in society, and this legacy continues today. Gain skills for life, Building better futures for all, Listening in, lending a hand.

Scouts seek out the answers to the big questions, and to the smaller problems that don’t seem to matter but really should. Most importantly, they say yes more often than they say no – whether they’re taking part in their first-ever camp away from home, or writing their first line of code, or accepting the last of the toasted marshmallows.

BUGANDA ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL.

CLASS MONITOR (Pupils Leaders)

Primary School Council – 1985-1987

I was an early introduction into what Leadership is and something I would feel passionately about at Buganda Road Primary School, and therefore we ensure we offer the children across the school, as many opportunities as possible to develop their leadership skills.  It  started in the morning, with leading the class line walking through the school and learning from each other; the roles and responsibilities.

As a class monitor, I would lead the line and have a helper at the back with the responsibility for taking the lunch to and from the canteen hall, taking messages to the office, handing things out and carrying out general jobs around the classroom. These roles remain, but the class leaders of the week also organise learning resources and put the visual timetable on the board. Children are also chosen to be learning buddies and digital leaders.

In  P7 , more responsibilities, which include being a play pals (supporting younger members of the school community at break and lunchtime), office assistants and sports’ leaders as well as providing opportunities for pupils to go through a ‘real-life’ recruitment process for the positions of Office Assistants and Play Pals.

BUSOGA COLLEGE SCOUTING DANCE AND DRAMA CLUB

At Buganda Road Primary School, Busoga College Mwiri and Makerere High School, I was involved in the school Music Dance and Drama activities. I went on to compete regionally among schools in Eastern Uganda and National level in the Interschool FESTIVALS that were held at the National theatre as competitions part of the Ministry of Education to promote children as the messengers in the National School Music, Dance, and Drama Festival. In the festival, we acted as stewards of traditional culture and the nation’s political future, and the performances promoted the culture in the performances. M.D.D. messages disseminated through poems, traditional dances, music, creative dances and playing a variety of instruments. At all-school assemblies; perform first to convey their messages to students. M.H.S. School.

The activities helped the forming of school clubs and activities to empower students to promote knowledge and life skills, increase positive connection with the school, peers and supportive adults, building social cohesion between young people from different communities.

SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE.

At the drama festivals performance at the National Theatre in Kampala, Uganda, as part of the school choir members we would sing swaying to the music as harmoniously described and at the end of the songs jubilantly in the front of the stage.

The national primary school music festivals followed the progress of the festival up through to the national level. Speaking with performers, organisers, choir trainers, and Ministry of Education officials, I found that the festival stage offered children a place to participate in the development of a new national culture. They were part of the Ministry of Education and Sports music festivals that arose out of this effort as part of the primary school curriculum each year and the festivals l consisted of various drama, speech, music, and dance categories.

I sang in the local church choir when they organised church music festivals to sing the AIDS AWARENESS SONG and the concept had shifted focus on AIDS dramas for sensitising communities to the disease in 1985 and 1986 (Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports, 1998). Designating a contemporary national development theme to each festival and requires that students create songs, dances, and dramas about it utilising traditional instruments and dance. The festival themes are “designed to awaken awareness of the Uganda Society on the development taking place in the political and socio-economic arenas.”

Uganda was hit hard by the AIDS virus in the 1980s. The subsequent success of Uganda in containing the spread of the disease has often been attributed to the National campaigns among the youth activities, which included openness about AIDS to facilitate prevention and calls for assistance from the international community.

Buganda Road Primary School and BUSOGA COLLEGE MWIRI SCOUTING Volunteering.

I  Patrick Kyanda was a cub scout in Primary School later becoming a junior scout and then a Venture Scout and was actively associated with scout activities to build my social confidence, self-esteem, social and Leadership skills. Today I count on activities I engaged in as a scout, and I know what Scouting has done to my life, and what it can do to young people out there too. I stand out to always give support to my scout family. Scouting created awareness at the school and in the community encouraging students at school and those who were facing challenges.

I had fond memories during my activities in the school MUSIC DANCE AND DRAMA at the Norman cinema when I was at Buganda Road primary when it used to be called THE centre for the school’s music, dance and drama activities. MAKERERE HIGH SCHOOL FROM STUDENT COUNCILOR 1992 – 1994

Patrick Kyanda

STUDENT COUNCIL COUNCILLOR DIVINITY CLASS.

I have always had an issue with TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS and when I finished my O Levels. I found myself on the peripheral as I could not get back to schools of my choice for A levels, M.H.S. (HEADMASTER) Mr. Godfrey Njagala came to my rescue, and I joined the school hoping to study for one term. However, I was to be proved wrong when I excelled enormously and our year was one to remember. I was a Student Councillor and held many other roles of responsibility in the school ranging from the DEBATING CLUB, DRAMA CLUB AND DIVINITY CLASS CLUB.

I will never forget the day when Mr. Godfrey Njagala called me out on assembly and punished me for being irresponsible so to say, but it was all about seeing me achieve my best potential as a FATHER FIGURE TO ALL STUDENTS.

You inspired a generation, and many of the O.B.s and O.G.s went to do well in life, and your LEGACY and MEMORY will live on forever.

Dear O.B.s and O.G.s

Please take a minute to look around and a second to acknowledge each other with a nod, a smile, and maybe even a handshake. Pay attention to the range of age’s folks you see. Chances are very good that seated near you are more than one person who was a student of Mr. Godfrey Njagala

And when I heard the news about his passing many thoughts and memories raced through my head about our student life at WANDEGYA Just like many of you, I thought about the last time I saw him.

Although decades had passed since we all sat in the same class and school, that feeling we had when he greeted us back then at the school gate has not faded a bit from our collective memories.

Mr. Godfrey Njagala strived relentlessly to guide us towards an exceptional understanding of how much life could be contained in written words(EDUCATION) . . . and he worked very hard at teaching us how to make sure that our own written words(KNOWLEDGE) were filled full of that life of LEARNING.

WE PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY IN THIS DIFFICULT TIME.

YMCA: YOUNG MENS CHRISTIANS ASSOCIATIONS. EXPERIENCE AS YMCA VOLUNTEER STORY the Difference You Make Volunteering Story

It’s that time of year in 1999 when I joined the National Volunteer Week I and had time to acknowledge the great work the YMCA volunteers were doing across the charity. From high school and college students to new grads, adults and seniors alike, volunteers come from near and far, year-round to donate their time and skills to the Y.

I helped other volunteers play a crucial role in helping us foster healthy communities within the and across the YMCA with values of rich history in partnering with our volunteers; that’s why we’ve asked volunteers share her personal story and experience as a volunteer with us this week.

At the time, I was a young professional running my business. Knowing that filled with drive and a passion for working with children and chose the YMCA for a volunteer placement. “There’s so much that we can learn from children as adults,” she explained. “Children always remind us to live life to the fullest and to love wholeheartedly and unconditionally. I volunteer with children because I’m passionate about helping them build a solid foundation for learning and want to be a part of that learning experience.

On top of that, children just have so much to offer! Whether it is a sense of fulfilment, their endless energy, constant joy, or only their happiness, they provide us with these simple moments and experiences that we often overlook as adults — they remind us to live life without regrets, and to always find a reason to smile or be happy despite the circumstances.”

I also loved how family oriented the YMCA centred on the values of love, support, and nourishment. Beyond this, the community is filled with beautiful, kind-hearted individuals who are all chasing a similar goal; we’re all striving to foster and promote a rich, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children where they can feel a sense of belonging, inclusivity, security, and well-being. On top of that, I’ve noticed that the educators and supervisors at my centre always ensure that children and parents have a voice when it comes to the child’s schedule and programming.

I definitely think that my time, efforts, and contributions at the YMCA have made a positive impact on children’s lives. During my time as a placement student, I’ve done my best to ensure that each child has felt loved, cared for, and valued. I think by doing so, I’ve not only led by example but have also shown them what it means to be a trusted adult ally.”

I was eager to hear share favourite moments — but apparently, it’s hard to narrow it down, and it was always a delight,”

I came into work on weekends to volunteer with the children, and they instantly turned to me with the biggest smiles and laughs. One child even tugged on my shoulder, and I missed you!’ Hearing the children say these things and witnessing how genuinely happy they were when I arrived turned entirely my day around.

There are memorable moments that I’ll never forget when children embraced and acknowledged me. While this may not sound like much, it meant the absolute world to me as this child did not typically make any physical or emotional contact with anyone at our centre. But one day, while I was sitting on the sofa, the child greeted me with a warm hug. I was astonished and knew right then and there that this would be a moment that I cherished for the rest of my life.”

I wanted to learn new skills and was interested in meeting new people, or you need a safe and welcoming place to complete your placement and/or volunteer hours for school.

YMCA as a Foundation body was founded 54 years ago with the main thrust to develop programmes that would prepare and shape the youths into good productive citizens guided by Christian principles. Overall, this mission was expected to be attained through numerous programmes, such as vocational and technical, indoor and outdoor as well as community-based projects offered by  YMCA. It is, Important to note is the vocational and technical skills programmes, though at a lower level than that of the YMCA.

Paradise Farm Camps

It was a lively and rewarding place to work Fostering growth in children of all ages while also developing and refining your skills makes this job exceptional.  For the 2 consecutive summers, I worked with a reliable staff of seasoned, supportive, fun people creating a welcoming, inspirational and close-knit work environment. There were ample opportunities for growth, Leadership, learning and advancement each day. I further enjoyed activities, like getting to swim every day, spending all day outdoors.

There was a supportive, difference-making employer committed to helping their staff offer the best experiences to their campers.

The outside job with rewarding daily tasks and interactions

General Camp Counsellor,

I worked at Paradise.Farm.Camp. For 2 summers and loved every single one. While this job was earnest as you are looking after children and ensuring their safety and well-being, it never truly feels like work. Working outdoors with children as well as amazing co-workers, and doing fun group activities like giant sports games, making bonfires, going swimming, rock climbing, and so much more! This job was by far the most rewarding job I have ever had, and the staffs genuinely make you feel like part of the family.

It was the best place to work and as a counsellor and my summers spent working at Paradise Farm Camps have been the best summers of my life. The staff supports each other well. Everyone on your team is someone you can turn to in a crisis. The day is draining, but it is always much fun! .This camp taught me a lot about myself and gave me the confidence to conquer the world in the work environment, and It is a good growing and learning experience

Camp Counsellor.

This opportunity was a rare one, offering me the chance to connect children to one of my favourite things in this world: nature. We explored the area around us and experienced different survival skills. The children also learned how to work and interact with each other. It allowed me to develop my teaching skills and figure out how to continue my learning after having been a camper. The management was excellent and worked well with all employees; there were occasional issues with scheduling things, but it ended up working out well. My co-workers were occasionally difficult to deal with. However, all problems have solutions, and we were determined to find answers. The best part about my job was meeting many new people every week and getting the opportunity to be someone else’s role model.

THE YOUNG TO YOUTH AWARENESS PROGRAM

FROM NEEDY AND UNDERPRIVILEGED FAMILIES BACKGROUND.

Young to youth was a unique grassroots organisation that promoted education, empowering the youth, women and supporting the HIV/AIDS I infected and affected persons.Y2Y was to establish in 2005 to promote the rights and well-being of the young, youth especially those who lack awareness in different ways.

The overall concern is the increasing number of problems and needs among the entire community; bearing in mind Children’s rights, vision and aspiration as well as the challenges facing the young and the youth.  The issue is how best can the primary role of a parent, which is the right of a child, be propagated on when a parent becomes ill and eventually dies.

It is on this note that the initiative has come in to tackle the effects of this long-standing war. Through this organisation/initiative, over 400 orphans will be assisted back to school this year though many are still at home waiting due to lack of immediate organisation. It is a primary concern that we avail to the young and youth in this age bracket a lifetime of opportunities.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

As a result of this, most children and youth have had many encounters in different fields of life, because diseases like HIV/AIDS here are looked as a misfortune, a curse or perhaps a vulnerable journey to the end of some one’s life. As a result, stigma is generated due to the stress that encompasses the whole situation the victims die even before their actual death.

The young to youth projects addressed part of the problem of orphans and schools that needed immediate support for the sake of school-going children. They will be given scholastic materials only once a year to cater for their school support scheme that is so relevant to our project in terms of literal awareness.

JUSTIFICATION

Young to youth enjoyed the full mandate of the people in this area. The program is sanctioned by the community will facilitate and steer the campaign of Youth awareness. A management committee of the project shall be elected by the residents to oversee the community’s efforts towards their goal.

Young to youth will remain a community-led program in this area of operation, for the case of sensitisation in the young to youth awareness drive and launch of the organisation.

THE GLOBAL CULTURAL EVENT BULLETIN REPORT.

BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION. Global Cultural Event

MARY INGABIRE GLOBAL EVENTS cordially invites our Families, Fans, Friends, Sponsors, Partners, Vendors, Cultural Institutions, Cluster Groups, Community Leaders, Organisations to blend with us to turn the GLOBAL CULTURAL EVENT UK into a platform for expressing our diverse cultures as tools for celebrating our heritage, showcasing our pride and preserving peace.

This event will provide everyone with knowledge of different Cultures. Companies and Organisations will have a unique opportunity to reach an audience of patriotic and highly motivated people from different corners of the continent and beyond.

The event will be exhibiting the abundant cultural elements of the Ugandan Community in the United Kingdom, and these are to be emerged with other Global Cultures from across the world. A small percentage of the Proceeds from the Gala will be driven towards addressing the alarming Issue of MENTAL HEALTH, particularly amongst the African and other ethnicity Minority communities in the United Kingdom.

The recently concluded cultural event that took place on the 23/June/ 2018 Saturday at the flagship venue, Newham Leisure Centre in London was the first of its kind and is slated to future on the annual calendar of summer events for the Ugandan and much of the East African community social calendar cultural events.

I was there on invitation during the day and made my way to the venue early enough to capture the activities as they unfolded. On arrival I was warmly welcomed by one of the lady ushers who took me to greet Mary Ingabire, the organiser, she gave me her time while she was getting ready for the day and I extended my gratitude for her efforts for what was going to a great day indeed.

It all began on a low key as expected. Usually, attendees arrive sooner or later at such events, but that is always in the spirit of good things, and we’re taking the places in the seating arrangement that was very informal although the V.I.P. was clearly evident as it was a laid out tent, later everybody settled in and was good to go.

Very interesting to note was that the children and young youth were very much in attendance as they had come with their parents, it was apparent why much of the events of that early afternoon were geared towards them, and the centre stage was a beehive of various activities for them ranging from presentations, traditional dance and music performances. You could see the sense of pride of many parents watching their children being involved and engaging with one another, which clearly was the main objective of the event.

All the last-minute preparations were in place and final touches to the venue with a stall of various exhibitions of Diaspora businesses in the U.K. being highlighted. The music and P.A. systems were all sound checked and tested with local Ugandan tunes serenading the venue, and one could really feel the party mood happening.

The cultural event was officially opened as an occasion slated to be on the official calendar annually, The Honourable, His Excellency, The Ambassador of Uganda to the United Kingdom Mr Peter Moto, arrived and was later to give a keynote speech after all attendees were brought to attention to sing the UGANDA NATIONAL ANTHEM in chorus. In his speech he thanked the organisers and encouraged the Ugandan diaspora to invest back in Uganda and use all opportunities accessible to them to do something progressive, he even went further to promote Ugandans who are British to visit the country and see its beauty. I later had a one on one chat with him as he went around engaging with the attendees and took this opportunity to thank him for all he is doing for Ugandans in the U.K. I always find his a very engaging man with a presence of respect and an excellent listener. There were many notables of the Ugandan Community in attendance especially those who are exceptional in doing a lot for the community in supporting causes and voicing issues that concern us as a community like for example,

  1. Mary lngabire. She is a promoter and manager who are on top of her game as she promotes signs and Manages Artistes under Richmond Promotions and she confesses her love for entertainment.
  2. Melian Ritah Nahwera. She was one of those helping and ushering attendees at the event and played a very supportive role to its success.
  3. Bassima crafts. A Ugandan brand making art and crafts materials that are carefully chosen based on customer feedback, the Name “Basiima” means “Appreciation, embracing, and acceptance”.
  4.  DJ Shady Shahid A renowned D.J. in the London music scene.
  5. DJ Mac Pro. A Ugandan D.J. based in the U.K. with experience of over 18 years in Service to promoting Uganda Music on all platforms. A FREELANCE DJ AT PIER ONE. CANNING TOWN, LONDON.
  6. Ambassador Julius Peter Moto. High Commissioner of Uganda in the United Kingdom and states that, “Uganda and the U.K. enjoy a very cordial bilateral relationship”.
  7. Jasper Ntege. Executive Director Foundation at Diaspora International Hospital Uganda Foundation and Presenter “Emboozi yamaka”/Business Manager at TGM RADIO UK.
  8. Patricia Ssewungu (Author) of the book “A Piece of Cake” An incredible story that is truly inspiring. The message is that we all have the inner strength to deal with issues (sometimes beyond our control) and come out on top.
  9.  Miss Uganda- UK 2017-18 WINNER-Jan Mukiibi, a University student in Biomedical Science. Miss Uganda U.K. Queen is about searching for a natural, pleasant, young lady to represent the community. PROMOTING, BEAUTY, DESCENT & CULTURE.
  10. Moses Wasswa. Co-founded a health diaspora group (Uganda Diaspora Health Foundation) with the aim to reduce Brain Drain in Uganda and also bring back learning to the U.K. based Uganda Diaspora community.
  11. Babra E Kemigisha. She is a Project Manager at the Uganda Youth Convention 2018 with an academic background in Social Sciences at the University of East London She has worked with ARCH Uganda as a Youth Advocate and Drugs and Alcohol adviser.

The later part of the day/evening took the direction of excitement and much fun as the much anticipated musical concert of Ugandan celebrity artists GEO-STEADY and CATHERINE KUSASIRA got the crowd off their seats and were dancing to the sweet melodies of the Uganda music right here, right now on U.K. soil. It was humbling to see the crowd swaying back and forth to their favourite tunes, and indeed a sending them into a frenzy was Catherine Kusasira as she left the stage.

I felt home sweet home and distant memories of my days dancing in CLUB OBLIGATO many years ago to the sounds of AFIGO BAND came rushing back to me. I guess the crowd-pulling music gave 100% credibility to the occasion and the fact that it was the first of its kind in the U.K. gave the organisers a challenge to live up to next year, and as the occasion ended, it was clear that the VISION, OBJECTIVES and AIMS of what had been intended for the event had been laid in the foundation of what will be the way forward in the years to come.

MY CRITICAL REVIEW AND ANALYSIS.

The GLOBAL CULTURAL EVENT should pay attention to the widening connection and appeal of the Diaspora community as to me it raises the Question WHY NOW? The youth need to be involved and engaged in cultural awareness with sensitisation as a solution to address the many issues they face through promoting HERITAGE, TRADITION, CULTURE and LIFE SKILLS for their empowerment. My observation was that a lot of artistic ideas portrayed and exhibited the youth’s understanding of their cultural background and it definitely helped to promote the message of the GLOBAL EVENT and the Youth benefiting through the learning process and experience. THE OCCASION WAS A SUCCESS.

“HISTORIC EVENT 6/OCTOBER/2018. This has been a long time coming. I have observed that community events in the U.K. Ugandan Diaspora are greatly valued and appreciated. The generation wants to RE-LIVE the good times of back in the motherland. Now I see that Eddy Yawe will be in the house. I love his songs. Olina works as they say. This will be the most fabulous Diaspora weekend and will bring back many of my youthful memories.

Many in London attended the BIG WEEKENDER that featured the EBONIES.

Our generation. used to enjoy the shows at the THEATRE EXCELSIOR BAT VALLEY AND IT WAS THE PLACE TO BE. I LOVE THE 90s. Have a look at what is coming to London is a walk down the memory lane, that day will be converted and wait for the pictures to see much dancing to the groove as we called it.

“I have just responded to a friend who was very worried about what She will be wearing on the 6th of October to the BIG WEEKENDER, and honestly I struggle with fashion, but luckily I had some pics of Eddy Yawe to give her an idea, and I guess I tried as personally, I have no clue either about the dress code but from what I guess it may be a tuxedo suit for men and ladies a long evening dress, dressy suit or formal cocktail-length dress. THOSE ARE MY FANCY OPINIONS. Otherwise, I have a suspicion that attendees will want to DRESS TO IMPRESS.”

Cultural Identity formation in the diaspora is maintained with the love of music that is at the heart of their cultural background’ most profound in social occasions and events like the “BIG WEEKENDER HISTORICAL EVENT to take place on the 6th OCTOBER 2018. THIS GIVES THE PEOPLE IN THE DIASPORA the opportunity to understand themselves, forming and maintaining social groups. Many Ugandans in the U.K. have settled in and around the London areas and enjoy a great social life. Eddie Yawe WILL BE IN London at the Royal Regency Hall. U.K. Ugandan Diaspora has led me to this question.

BIG WEEKENDER HISTORY IN THE MAKING UK EVENT.

One has to understand the role of social and cultural events in the U.K. Ugandan Diaspora has led me to this question.

 WHO IS DIASPORIAN?

Many years back, the word “Kyeyo” and “Munabulaya” to mean those who had migrated to Europe, especially in the first wave was seen as demeaning and a stigma was attached to it. Many Ugandans have now settled in the countries they moved to in the DIASPORA. They are highly articulate, educated, and mobile and tend to work in professional sectors like healthcare as managers, supervision role and some have climbed the ladder to be doctors, engineers and of course have a good income. I asked a friend what he thinks about events, and he was keen to say, I want my children to know their culture, I guess that is what he values and appreciates. I am closely following the BIG WEEKENDER HISTORY IN THE MAKING EVENT as we all know it has been dubbed the new standard to come on the social scene. This will allow for an informed opinion as many had abandoned social events thinking negatively about them as they have moved on. Personally, from my experience in the U.K. for 20 years, I have seen a shift from house parties, crowded small clubs to classy venues and well-organised shows; I forgot boat cruises and bus tours. Ugandans in the U.K. Diaspora are known for demanding what they want, and hence, the organisers have done much homework. All the best to them.

UGANDA UK CONVENTION 2018.

To the organisers of the Ugandan Convention U.K. and Willy Nsubuga Mutenza (personally), I would like to thank you for the invitation to attend the function last weekend, I have much to say, but in brief, I would state that it was something I have not been familiar with seeing the Ugandan Diaspora community at significant engaging at all levels, I apologise that I could not make it for the AFRIGO BAND SHOW. However, I have seen the photos (It was exceptional to see the crowd). I had a V.I.P. access, a privilege that allowed me to make informed opinions about the “ROLE OF SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS IN THE UK DIASPORA something I have been constructing a review about in the UGANDA UK community.

I had the honour to meet Jackie again Mumbejja Jacqueline M Dumba at the Ugandan Convention U.K. The prestigious pageant is back for the 8th year running. The glamorous and colourful event will see 12 finalists from around the U.K. of Uganda heritage take centre stage in the hope to become the new Queen of the Ugandan community in the U.K. The most anticipated event in the Ugandan calendar in the diaspora will see a live performance from Ugandan’s leading female diva IRYN NAMUBIRU entertain the audience alongside cultural performances from Bantu Arts. To be held on the 29th of September 2018. The EVENT: Miss Uganda U.K. Queen is about searching for a natural, pleasant, young lady to represent the community and PROMOTING BEAUTY, DESCENT & CULTURE. Awards: BEFFTA Awards 2014 ‘Best Beauty Pageant’ BEFFTA Awards 2016 ‘Best Beauty Queen’

Mumbejja Jacqueline M Dumba Thank you for the great work and being a great friend.

Following on from the recently concluded Ugandan U.K. convention, I met a friend (Pauline Najjuma), and I will tell you what we discussed and give you a background about what she is doing for the community. The experience many go through in the diaspora when they lose a loved one. I have done some digging and really discovered that apart from R.I.P. and the send-off Service, most families are on their own. There are things many are unaware of in the diaspora community. Am investigating and writing what I am calling THE FINAL REPORT, LOSS OF A LOVED ONE. THE DO.s and DON’Ts in the diaspora as many wish to be repatriated back home as a closure to the family.

From the AFRIGO BAND successful show at the Uganda convention U.K. next on the agenda is THE BIG WEEKENDER, HISTORY IN THE MAKING. The U.K. Ugandan diaspora is having the best of both worlds, and it does not get any better. I am definitely geared up to attend with a contingency of many friends who have been missing out on the social scene. CREDIBILITY COUNTS IN MANY WAYS.

This is where I began my storyline of life in secondary school. MWIRI MADE ME as we say. Thanks, Mwiri Old Boys Association president Patrick Ibembe for journeying all the way from Uganda to bridge the spirit of the leopard at the Ugandan Convention 2018.

Credibility counts in many ways, and knowing Nancy Kitaka from her work in the UK DIASPORA has been worthwhile. She has been honoured with the Humanitarian Achiever’s Award at the African Women in Europe Awards that was held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2016. She is the chief executive officer of Alive Group, an H.I.V./Aids awareness charity. The award was in recognition of her work in the Ugandan community in the U.K. since 2011. She is an event hostess and presenter. It was my pleasure and gratitude to meet her in person with the privilege to engage with her one on one. She accepted my praise for her work in the diaspora community. She is also involved in other activities like the Ganda Foundation, Positive East and AWECS women’s project. We met at the Ugandan Convention U.K.

I send my appreciation to her family, who personally know me.

I have known Jojo K Taylor for a long time, and personally, I have a lot I have learnt and taken on as advice from her as a friend. She has a BRAND that has been constructed through hard work and going forward, and I see that name as a talking point in the U.K. Ugandan diaspora community. Thank you for the goodie gift bag of the products you gave me, and that was really humbling and sincere, needless to say, it was worth some hundreds of pounds.

Officially endorsed as a Team papa Jasper Ntege community member and I credit my fellow diaspora colleague for his hard work and efforts of the DIASPORA INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL. I have had a detailed brief, and the reality is that it’s a noble cause.

THE ROLE PLAYED BY SOCIAL & CULTURAL EVENTS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM UGANDAN DIASPORA COMMUNITY.

Trans National events in the diaspora and they play a vital role to the lives of settled migrants and keep the ties in their home or mother countries, and this has been given the phrase “Umbilical cord”, and that attachment is more pronounced among the first generation and will gradually break as the children born in the diaspora loss the connection of the parent’s countries like the native languages and culture.

The context of this can be seen through the Ugandan diaspora in the U.K. were many social and cultural events are organised primarily during the summer when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities, The recently concluded events like the U.K. Uganda Sports day, The Global Cultural Event and many more point in the right direction of a strong sense of community. The climax of the calendar will see the BIG WEEKENDER that had been dubbed the HISTORIC EVENT as it has never happened that a big line-up is put together knowing the organisation involved, considerable effort has been put in place. This is to set the standard in Ugandan diaspora events in the U.K. as an annual event.

The 6th /October/2018 will be that day the event will take place at the famous Royal Regency Hall in London; a lot can be borrowed as many events usually feature key artists from Uganda and a few curtain-raisers backed up by a D.J. but as expected not to disappoint the community is expecting a lot from the show.

I will limit my observation on the trend in the social calendar as many events are organised but lack a strong grassroots profile and are never organised again so the challenge and responsibility that the organisers have are to live up to the expectations as they will be judged, so what is the connection made between the previous and current events, they all help to glue the Uganda community together as in the U.K. many live in around London.

The reality is that THE BIG WEEKENDER HISTORIC EVENT has exposed the fact that the Ugandan community in the U.K. is demanding more and with the help of social media information about what is happening quickly goes out helping to enhance a level of awareness about what they want or demand from the events they attend.

This is what many would need to know about what is happening in the community, and the details will be announced towards the day of the event, but the list of artists is clearly everyone’s favourites right from the old generation of the EBONIES to the current ones.

The much anticipated social event will be HISTORY IN THE MAKING as the BIG WEEKENDER has talked in the Uganda community and has been trending on the social media platforms, especially Facebook and what’s up. It is worth noting that many events take place in the U.K. Uganda diaspora community that it is expected that many travels far and beyond to attend with some taking time off to use this as an opportunity to network and catch up with friends.

This time round attention is being drawn to the skills of the diaspora as many are highly exposed and educated with good working experience in the diaspora, this level of engagement has presented a new level of thinking as a way forward to what social events mean as not just a mere night out. Many Ugandans in the U.K. have always felt undervalued and rated as “kyeyo” people. Still, now they are reaching out through the social ladder by navigating the resource opportunities that this event presents to what concerns them and what they need to know. I am pointing this out as many Ugandan events have tended to give a bird’s eye view and never the chance to get an opinion or feedback from the community which has managed to leave many questions unanswered as to the real motive of the event. Many attending should judge THE BIG WEEKENDER HISTORIC EVENT.

Something transformational has been happening online, especially in the Ugandan diaspora as their voices have begun populating social media. This has had a particularly noticeable effect in the U.K. diaspora.  Not only are they challenging the underpinnings of settled migrants but are demanding more from cultural and social events. The impact of Uganda’s diaspora is engaging intellectually and materially in social activities needs more time to mature fully as seen with the BIG WEEKENDER EVENT.

To affect the process, it will need to go beyond side-line commentary and engage in the community both at the international and local levels.  This, however, will take time to accomplish. As much as we bicker about the differences the most effective role – for now – maybe the advocacy for strong engagement and have a collective voice.

A CROSS-REFERENCE OF THE UGANDA UK CONVENTION 2018 HELD ON THE 15TH September AND THE BIG WEEKENDER ON THE 06TH October 2018.

The diaspora community that attend social events in the U.K. find that they are rewarded by the fact that they can engage with each other and part takes in rekindling the nostalgia of back home in Uganda as usually the keynote and highlight are the guest artists from Uganda that are invited to sing and entertain. I can point out the likes of AFRIGO BAND and not to mention that the BIG WEEKENDER has put together a line-up that has been dubbed HISTORY IN THE MAKING that will include the EBONIES, EDDY YAWE, GRAVITY OMUTUJJU to mention but a few. This year 2018 has been a challenging one as there have been many other events on the Ugandan scene like the boat cruises with some not attended well. In the earlier days if the migrant story social events used to be more of house parties or events and usually were centred around accomplishments by those hosting them for having been grant residence papers so to say and as time progress clubs like PIER ONE in Dalston Hackney came on the scene and also local pubs in the areas that had a large, settled community like LIVE AND LET LIVE in forest gate London

As mentioned earlier, the Uganda U.K. Convention is a trade and investment forum that has become firmly established as an annual event in the U.K. whose primary focus has been the promotion of WEALTH CREATION in Uganda and usually works to promote international investors, project developers, together with government delegations and high profile leaders to achieve this. Those attending this year’s event should expect a well-structured format that will allow for peer to peer engagement for strategic partnership and business networking.

After useful research in the community, the organisers of the BIG WEEKENDER concluded that they needed to look into what best was the way forward for the social scene in the Ugandan community and in doing so the outcome was to set a standard as the option for the community. After the successful event of the EASTER BASH 2018 that was powered by JOBS LINK (U.K.) and the team that brought you “Hit after Hit” that was a round of celebration of the life of an Icon, RADIO MOWZEY of Goodlife aka Radio and Weasel. At the time a percentage of the fee was donated to the late’s family. This called for the need to celebrate the Ugandan Music Legend; prominent artists from Uganda, EDDY KENZO, CINDY, YKEE- BENDA, SPICE DIANA and WEASEL with the R.A.W. management were all on the line-up for that Easter Weekend. It was a clear achievement and raised the stakes of what else can be put on a show in the future, hence the “HISTORY IN THE MAKING “THE BIG WEEKENDER” In many cases, social events are appreciated have a goodwill gesture for the community’s overwhelming and continued support after the HIT AFTER HIT show by the Ugandan super stars Chameleon and Juliana last year. The BIG WEEKENDER Will Feature  Eddy Yawe a Performing Artist, Vocalist, Songwriter, Sound Engineer and Proprietor of Dream Studio of the biggest Recording Studios in East and Central Africa.

ANALYSIS

I have explored how second-generation of Ugandan migrants and descendants have negotiated a connection of their parental “homeland”. Many in the first generation Ugandans maintained a transnational optic as they nested their hope to return “home” with aspirations for their children. In contrast, for the second generation questions of “return” reveal multiple identity positions to “home” as country-of-birth being Britain and ancestral “homeland” Uganda. Considerations loom significant and age over time, life course and generation act as key variables within these debates, with “return” the contested site for negotiating ‘belonging’ now get a connection with the settled migrants to form a sense of community. This creates a differentiated picture as second-generation descendants enact a range of return mobility and relational engagements to Uganda as ancestral ‘homeland’. The sense of belonging contributes to the diaspora knowledge about how they can live through their memories and create a sense of belonging.  The past experiences from the home country can endure in a virtual sense through nurturing the connection in minds and can be used to ‘warm-up’ and give vitality to the present through social events in the local community.  There is need for remapping of the concept of “diaspora” and the role of successive generations in the diasporic experience.

The High Representative for Foreign Affairs, to consider imposing targeted sanctions, such as travel and visa bans, on the key individuals responsible for drafting and adopting laws in Uganda and Nigeria criminalizing homosexuality.

It led to having foreign aid cut by donor countries was going to affect many people in the country, so later; the Minster of Ethics in Uganda had the law amended.
  3.  I have been involved in workshops for the members, and equal justice has been evident from what my experience at university and I chose to be an advocate, a voice and activist with particular interest to Uganda. In a way, I have put my life out there and more or less an easy target to silence as that is not what they would want, to empower the voiceless.
  4.  When I finished my degree, my lecturers and professors who had been very instrumental in my 3 years at the University wished me all the best. They knew that I would be doing what I love both nationally and internationally, especially in the field of human rights advocacy and activism. The School of Law gave me 2 outstanding references for my job prospects if I ever need them when applying for work.
  5.  On 15/July/2014, I was awarded my degree at the graduation ceremony held at the University.

STARTING MY BUSINESS, ENTERTAINMENT CENTRES UGANDA

I saw a future in entrepreneurship and had a wish to run my own business. Some of them are motivated by an intention to provide me with a job or to do a kind of situation in which they enjoy without a superior boss. Some others feel a need for a more significant challenge or a bit better working conditions. Many people search for activities which will make them financially independent. The reasons for creating their own business are numerous. Such purposes depend on personalities. Not everyone is capable of running a business or feels what is necessary to run an individual project.

The business was achieving my pleasure and the need for independence, as well as creativity, are always based on the development of an individual business project, i.e. a business. The motivation was my readiness to take a challenge; pleasure in work and solving of challenging projects; setting of personal goals; talent, development of potentials and progress to efficient results; control of resources; pleasure in work with experts and constant striving to the performance improvement. The other motivation factors were the wish to be my boss without the need to be responsible to other superior persons; pleasure in running a job, as well as in guiding other persons according to the predicted plans; mobilization of resources and engagement of labour-power, the people, to accomplish their own goals; taking of responsibility; pleasure in competition and defeating the competitor creation of reputation and status in the society.

This allowed me to have some independence and fewer limitations to evaluate my own decisions with the unwillingness to depend on other people on the emotional or social plan; insistence on freedom; wish for a different behaviour; pleasure in presenting and giving form to creative ideas; urge to produce new products.

My characteristics as an entrepreneur were the most important in the stage of starting the business with the ability to learn from experience becomes more important after the running of an enterprise and the growth and development of the enterprise depend on gained experience, knowledge and expertise to adapt to influences from the environment.

I was efficient in motivating employees at all stages of business development, in that period, as an entrepreneur to perceive everything and, at the same time, to enable others to learn the new job. The ability to build competitiveness was of crucial importance for the success of an enterprise depending on the motivation, skill, a person’s attitudes and intention.
