Early Life
Born Nicholas Bernard James Adam McGarry Byrne Jr. in Dublin, Ireland, on October 9, 1978, Nicky was raised by his parents, Nicholas and Yvonne Byrne, alongside his two siblings. Sadly, his father passed away in 2009. Byrne’s education included attending Pobalscoil Neasáin for his secondary studies.
Byrne’s football journey began with Dublin clubs St. Kevin’s Boys and Home Farm. His professional career kicked off as a goalkeeper for Leeds United in 1995, where he played a part in their 1997 FA Youth Cup victory. After two years, he left Leeds following the expiration of his contract in 1997. His subsequent football endeavors included playing for Scarborough, Cambridge United, Shelbourne, Cobh Ramblers, and St. Francis. He also represented Ireland at various youth levels and participated in the 2014 Soccer Aid, emerging victorious.
Music Career
In 1998, Byrne auditioned for a new Irish boy band under the guidance of Boyzone’s manager, Louis Walsh, leading to the formation of Westlife alongside Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, and Brian McFadden. The group achieved phenomenal success, releasing 12 studio albums and securing 25 top 10 singles in the UK, with 14 reaching number one. They have sold over 55 million records globally. Byrne contributed as a co-writer for many of their songs. After a hiatus in 2012, Westlife reunited in 2018 for their 20th anniversary, releasing “Spectrum” (2019) and “Wild Dreams” (2021). Additionally, Byrne scored a #1 hit with the 2002 Irish FIFA World Cup anthem “Here Come The Good Times (Ireland).” In 2016, he represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Sunlight” but didn’t make it to the final. Television and Radio Career
Nicky Byrne has frequently participated in charity specials like “Comic Relief” and “Children in Need,” even co-hosting the latter from Belfast in 2001 and a BBC Radio 2 special a decade later. He narrated “The Snowman Christmas Special” stage production and the documentary “Picture of You,” dedicated to the late Boyzone member Stephen Gately. Byrne has hosted the Cheerios ChildLine Concert multiple times and presented the “Celebrity Sunday” show on RTÉ 2fm. In 2012, he hosted RTÉ’s “Football’s Next Star” and, the following year, “The Hit.” From 2014 to 2019, he co-hosted a weekday show on RTÉ 2fm, and in 2015, he led the game show “The Million Euro Challenge.” Since 2017, Byrne has been the face of Ireland’s “Dancing with the Stars” and in 2021, he took on hosting duties for “Last Singer Standing.” In 2024, he launched his podcast, “Nicky Byrne HQ.”
Personal Life
On August 5, 2003, Nicky married Georgina Ahern, who he met in secondary school. They wed at the Wicklow Register Office, then on August 9th, they had a church blessing at the Roman Catholic Church of St Pierre et St Paul in France. The couple has welcomed twin sons Rocco and Jay (born 2007) and daughter Gia (born 2013) together. Georgina’ father, Bertie Ahern, served as the Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland from 1997 to 2008. In 2010, Nicky’s family organized the fundraising event the Nikki Byrne Twilight Ball in honor of their late father. The event raised more than €200,000 and funded a heart attack awareness campaign that aired on the radio and on television.
