Vinesh is one of the six wrestler sisters from Haryana, India, collectively known as the Phogat sisters.

Phogat sisters include Geeta, Babita, Priyanka, Ritu, Vinesh, and Sangeeta. Priyanka and Vinesh are born to the same parents, whereas the other four are their cousins.

She is the first Indian woman wrestler to win both Commonwealth and Asian Championship gold medals. 

Phogat is also the only Indian woman wrestler to win multiple World Wrestling Championships medals.

Her father, Rajpal Phogat, was an Indian wrestler who passed away when she was a young girl.

Rajpal and his brother, Mahabir Singh Phogat, had to deal with immense pressure from the community in their village to allow the young Phogat sisters to wrestle.

Vinesh and Priyanka were brought up and trained by their uncle, Mahabir Singh Phogat, after the death of their father, Rajpal Phogat.

Geeta, Babita, Reetu, and Sangeeta are the daughters of Dronacharya Award winner Mahabir Singh Phogat.

The 2016 Bollywood movie, Dangal, starring Aamir Khan as Mahabir Singh Phogat, is loosely based on the lives of Geeta and Babita Phogat.

In the blockbuster movie, Indian actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra portrayed the roles of Geeta and Babita Phogat, respectively.

Mahabir Singh Phogat trained all six Phogat sisters in their village of Balali in the Bhiwani district of Haryana state.

Geeta, Babita, and Vinesh are gold medalists at the Commonwealth Games, while Priyanka is a silver medalist at the Asian Championships.
