Yitzahk Edward Asner was born on the 15st November 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA of Russian and Jewish ancestry. He is an actor and voice artist, best known for starring in a number of TV shows and films, such as the role of Lou Grant in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, for which he won an Emmy Award. Currently, he is starring in the CBC TV series, entitled “Michael, Tuesdays and Thursdays”. His career has been active since the 1960s.

Have you ever wondered how rich Ed Asner is? It is estimated by authoritative sources that Ed’s net worth is over $12 million, with the main source being his career as a professional actor, with another source coming from his work as a voice artist in a number of different projects.

Ed Asner Net Worth $12 Million

Ed Asner was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, by his father David Morris Asner, who worked as a seller, and mother Lizzie, a housewife. After graduation from Wyandotte High School in his hometown, Kansas City, he moved to Chicago to continue his education at the University of Chicago. During the high school, he was very active in different sports, such as football and basketball, but he found himself in acting when he was announcing for the high school radio station. When he moved to Chicago, Asner joined the Playwrights Theatre Club, but didn`t stay long enough with the group, as he moved to New York City, where he became a member of the theater troupe The Second City, and appeared in few plays including the “Threepenny Opera”. His career as an actor slowly began to develop, and he managed to obtain his first television role in 1963, as Detective Sgt. Thomas Siroleo in the TV series Screen Actors Guild Ralph Morgan Award. Ever since then, his career has gone only upwards, and so did his net worth.

Before the 1970s, Ed was cast in numerous small roles in TV series such as “Breaking Point” (1963), “Mr. Novak” (1963-1965), “Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea” (1965), “The Invaders” (1967-1968), “Insight” (1967), and several others. In 1970, Ed was selected for the role of Lou Grant in the popular TV comedy series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, alongside Mary  and Gavin MacLeod in lead roles. The show ran for seven years, and made Ed popular in Hollywood, such that after the show ended, his role of Lou Grant was reprised in the TV series “Lou Grant”, and was aired from 1977 until 1982.

In 1983, he was cast in the film “Danie”, alongside Timothy Hutton, Ellen Barkin and Lindsay Crouse, then in 1984, he was selected for the role of Sam Waltman in the TV series “Off The Rack”, which aired until 1985. The next year he was cast in the film “The Christmas Star”, as Horace McNickle, and in the same year, Ed was featured in the film “Kate`s Secret”. All his roles added steadily if unspectacularly to his net worth.

To talk further of his successful career, Ed has also had numerous voice roles, in films and TV series – “Batman: The Animated Series” (1992-1994), “Captain Planet And Planeteers” (1990-1995), and in recent years, “The Boondocks” (2005-2014), “Frozen In Time” (2014), “Up” (2009) and numerous others which have only added to his net worth.

Overall, Ed is a rather successful actor, as he has appeared in over 100 TV and film roles, for which he has won countless prestigious awards, including five Golden Globes, and 19 other awards, such as Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Drama Series.

Regarding Ed Asner personal life, he was married to Nancy Sykes from 1959 to 1988, with whom he has three children, one of whom has autism, so Asner is a big supporter of the nonprofit organization “Autism Speaks”. In 1998 he married Cindy Gilmore, but they divorced in 2007. Asner is very active as a member of several organizations, such as the Rosenberg Fund for Children, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and the Honorary Board of Directors.

Quote
1 [on Wendell Corey] He said he used to piss her [Barbara Stanwyck] off all the time because she is so meticulous. If her call was for ten, she would show up at 9:30. So he knew how bugged she got with him because he was always late. Even if he was there on time, he’d hover outside the stage door until it was one or two minutes past and then come onto the stage–just to get her goat!
2 [on his acting projects nowadays] I tour with a one-man show, and I do movies, if you’re making them.
3 [on law enforcement interaction with people with autism] They’ve got to assess the situation and respond accordingly, and hopefully, amicably treat sufferers from autism.
4 Raising kids is part joy and part guerrilla warfare.
5 To my knowledge, there is no blacklist. But there is a mindset, even among liberal producers, that says, “He may be difficult so let’s avoid him”.
6 [on the history of American foreign policy] I also think that there is a strong streak of racism, whenever we engage in foreign adventures. Our whole history in regime change has been of people of different color.
7 [on making the transition from the comedy Mary Tyler Moore (1970) to its dramatic spin-off series Lou Grant (1977)] We were really worried about changing over from a three-camera, half-hour comedy to a one-camera, full-hour drama. The audience wasn’t ready for the switch–even CBS billed us in their promos as a comedy. In fact, the whole thing was impossible. But we didn’t know that.
