Hazel Coates, a self-taught cook and home maker, is one of the contestants on MasterChef UK 2025. Based in London, she enjoys preparing tasty, moderately nutritious meals without sacrificing flavor. Hazel loves experimenting with flavors influenced by Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Italian cuisines.

Hazel began cooking at a young age. She shared with the BBC: “Since I was able to stand on a small step to reach the kitchen counter, my mum would involve me and my brother in the kitchen. She encouraged us to bake bread, make biscuits, and create other treats. I’ve been cooking ever since. Crafting delectable dishes to satisfy cravings is my passion.”

In discussing her earliest cooking recollection, Hazel mentioned: “My mum used to prepare a fish pie with a cornflake crust when I was very young, and I remember it vividly and how much I adored it! My dad would also make a pasta bake every Friday. It was simple, with olive oil, mozzarella, and tomatoes, but it developed a crispy top, and I just adored it. It provided comfort, and I’ve been trying to recreate it ever since.

“I vividly remember making Christmas biscuits to hang on the tree, shaping them with cutters and making a hole at the top with a pencil for threading the string. None of the biscuits lasted until Christmas day; they were picked off the tree long before!”

As a homemaker, Hazel Coates competes in MasterChef UK 2025 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, judged by John Torode and Gregg Wallace. She will compete in the second week of heats against Aileen, Marcella, Sam Kaeokon, and Trevor Scarlett.

Hazel shared the ‘big news’ on Instagram. She posted: “Got some big news for you all !! I’m very, very excited to announce that I’ll be competing in #MasterChefUK this year!! Make sure to tune in tonight or on Wednesday 13th August at 8pm on BBC One and @bbciplayer to see how I do.”

Hazel entered the competition “to do something for myself, to regain something that was mine, just mine!” She added: “I had just had a baby, and it was coming up to a year and honestly, I was feeling very out of sorts. I wasn’t sure who I was anymore, I had completely lost my flow in the kitchen and sometimes didn’t even know how or what to cook so I suppose it was me trying to regain or take back a part of myself.”

She continued: “I have watched MasterChef for years and have been cooking for so long. I’ve always thought I was a decent cook and when I cook for friends and family, they always enjoy it but I want to know how good I am. I want to show my baby girl that you should go for what you desire. I’d like to think I’ve got a really good shot so I’m going for it.”
