April Perry Biography – April Perry Wiki
April Perry is a jurist serving on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She was appointed by President Joe Biden, a Democrat, on April 24, 2024, to succeed Nancy Lee Maldonado. The Senate confirmed her appointment on November 12, 2024, and she officially began her duties on November 20, 2024.
Initially, President Biden had nominated Perry in 2023 to become Chicago’s first female U.S. Attorney. However, her appointment was delayed due to Ohio Senator J.D. Vance’s “procedural hold” affecting all U.S. attorney nominations.
Before her nomination to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Judge Perry held the position of Senior Counsel for Global Investigations and Fraud and Abuse Prevention at GE HealthCare between 2022 and 2024.
In her career prior to GE HealthCare, Judge Perry worked as the General Counsel at Ubiety Technologies from 2019 to 2022. From 2017 to 2019, she was the Chief Deputy State’s Attorney and Chief Ethics Officer at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
From 2004 to 2016, Judge Perry was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. During her tenure there, she held various leadership roles, including Supervisory Litigation Counsel from 2011 to 2016, Project Safe Childhood Coordinator from 2010 to 2016, Civil Rights and Hate Crimes Coordinator from 2014 to 2016, and Deputy Chief in the Narcotics and Gangs unit between 2010 and 2011.
Judge Perry’s career began as a law clerk for Judge Joel M. Flaum at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 2003 to 2004. She graduated magna cum laude with her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in 2003, and earned her B.S., also magna cum laude, from Northwestern University in 2000.
U.S. attorney
President Joe Biden nominated April Perry in July 2023 to become Chicago’s U.S. attorney. She would have replaced John Lausch, who left office in March 2023 after five years in that role. Her confirmation was blocked by Vice President JD Vance (then-U.S. Senator from Ohio), who said he did it to protest the prosecution of Donald Trump. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate instead as a federal district court judge.

National Guard
On Monday, October 06, 2025, federal judge April Perry declined to block the deployment of National Guard units to Illinois, a mobilization that the state’s governor, JB Pritzker, labeled an “unconstitutional invasion” by the federal government, even as President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to bypass court battles and send in the troops.
The judge’s ruling in Illinois, which allows the Trump-ordered deployment to move ahead for now, came as a military official said 200 troops from the Texas Guard were headed to Illinois. They are expected to be deployed in the Chicago area by Tuesday or Wednesday, the New York Times reported. A similar effort to send Texas troops to Portland, Ore., has been blocked for now.
