Judge Currie, an alumna of McClenaghan High School, furthered her education at the University of South Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970. Her legal expertise was honed at George Washington University Law School, where she graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1975, according to information from the Federal Judicial Center.

Originating from Florence, South Carolina, Currie’s legal career commenced with a clerkship under U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur L. Burnett in the District of Columbia from 1973 to 1974. Following this, she practiced law privately in Washington, D.C., until 1978. Her career in public service began as an assistant U.S. attorney, first in the District of Columbia from 1978 to 1980, and then in South Carolina until 1984.

In 1984, Currie was appointed as a U.S. magistrate judge for South Carolina, a role she fulfilled until 1986. Subsequently, she returned to private legal practice in Columbia and simultaneously contributed as an adjunct law professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law from 1986 to 1989. Her leadership abilities were further recognized when she served as the chief deputy attorney general of South Carolina from 1989 until her federal judicial appointment in 1994.

Nominated once again by President Clinton in January 1994, Currie succeeded Judge Falcon Black Hawkins Jr. on the federal bench. Her confirmation by the Senate in March cemented her role in the judiciary, which she continued in a senior capacity from 2013.
