Wendy Lewis, a prominent criminal defense lawyer, practices in Utah and co-leads the Salt Lake City-based firm Nester Lewis PLLC. She has gained recognition for her involvement in numerous noteworthy and intricate cases, such as State of Utah v. Valentino Colorow, State of Utah v. John Blanchard, and United States v. Brian David Mitchell.
After earning her law degree from the University of Utah College of Law in 1991, where she distinguished herself as a William H. Leary Scholar and editor of the Utah Law Review, Wendy relocated to Denver, Colorado. There, she served as a clerk for the Honorable Robert H. MacWilliams of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, gaining experience in handling a wide range of federal civil and criminal cases.
In 1992, Wendy returned to Utah and joined a private law firm as an associate. She managed complex criminal cases alongside civil matters, including personal injury, domestic issues, and contract law. Throughout her time in private practice, she took numerous state and federal cases to trial, notably in homicide and fraud, securing several acquittals for her clients. Her legal expertise also extended to arguing cases before the Utah Court of Appeals, the Utah Supreme Court, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Wendy resumed her clerking career in 1997, dedicating more than three years to assisting the Honorable Dale A. Kimball, a Federal District Judge in Utah. This role further deepened her understanding of federal court operations within the state.
In January 2001, Wendy transitioned to the role of Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of Utah, where she spent over two decades advocating for defendants who could not afford legal representation in Federal Court.
Her commitment to justice extended to serving as the representative of the Utah Federal Public Defender’s Office in the District of Utah’s Tribal Reentry Court. She visited tribal lands, working with tribal members to facilitate their reintegration into society after federal convictions. For the last nine years, Wendy held a senior supervisory position within the Federal Public Defender’s Office, overseeing case assignments and spearheading efforts in hiring and diversity recruitment.
Wendy is active in the Federal Bar Association, the Utah Women Lawyers Association, and the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She also serves as a mentor to law students and has worked as a volunteer in educational institutions. In 2022, Wendy joined her good friend and former colleague, Kathryn N. Nester, to start Nester Lewis PLLC. Wendy is licensed to practice in Utah federal and state courts and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
