Paul Wong holds the position of judge at the O’ahu First Circuit Court in Hawaii. Governor David Y. Ige appointed him to this role on December 20, 2017, where he now oversees criminal felony cases. Before moving to the Circuit Court, Judge Wong served as a District Judge for the First Circuit, a position he began on May 29, 2012.

Before his District Judgeship, Judge Wong was a Partner at the law firm McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon, LLP, starting in 2005. His legal career also includes time as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Honolulu’s City and County.

In recognition of his dedication and contributions to the judiciary, Judge Wong received the 2021 Jurist of the Year Award from Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald. This accolade, presented during the Hawaii State Judiciary’s Statewide Incentive Awards Ceremony on October 29, celebrates individuals who excel in public service and enhance court operations and programs.

Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Judge Wong stepped up as the chair of the Committee on Operational Solutions. His leadership was vital in ensuring the continuity of essential court services while safeguarding the health of court users, staff, and judges.

Education

Judge Wong’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Southern California. He then pursued a Doctorate of Jurisprudence at Boston College Law School, graduating in 1993. During his time at law school, he was honored with the West Publishing Company Award for his significant contributions and served as President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students’ Association.
