Lewis Liman serves as a Judge for the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York. He was appointed by President Donald Trump, a member of the Republican Party, on May 15, 2018, and later confirmed by the United States Senate on December 19, 2019.
Before taking on his judicial role on January 1, 2020, Judge Liman worked as a litigation partner at Cleary Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, LLP, and Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. Additionally, he was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York and acted as Deputy Chief of Appeals in that office.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1983 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1987, along with a Master’s degree with distinction in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

Lewis Liman is the son of Ellen Fogelson and the late Arthur L. Liman, the trial lawyer who led the Iran-contra investigation in the U.S. Senate. His father, Arthur Liman, died at 64 on July 17, 1997, in his Manhattan apartment after suffering from bladder cancer. He has two siblings: Emily, a neurobiologist, and Douglas Liman, a filmmaker.
