Michael Farbiarz currently serves as a Judge on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. His appointment came from President Joe Biden, who is part of the Democratic Party, on January 3, 2023. This appointment was to fill the vacancy left by Judge Noel Hillman, who transitioned to senior status on April 4, 2022. Farbiarz’s confirmation by the U.S. Senate happened on May 2, 2023, and he officially assumed his duties on May 5, 2023.

Before assuming his current role, Farbiarz was the General Counsel for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from 2016 until 2023, overseeing one of the largest public entities in the nation. In this capacity, he led a legal department with approximately 120 personnel and managed the negotiation and execution of significant infrastructure agreements. His notable achievements include overseeing two major public-private partnerships, the largest in U.S. history up to that time, and handling multi-billion dollar projects, such as a $15 billion initiative to revamp JFK airport.

Earlier in his career, Judge Farbiarz was a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York from 2004 to 2014. He achieved high recognition by receiving the Department of Justice’s top annual accolade. His legal work primarily involved terrorism, counter-espionage, and arms trafficking. From 2010 to 2014, he contributed significantly as Co-Chief of the SDNY’s unit specializing in national security.

Judge Farbiarz was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York from 2001 to 2004. He served as a law clerk for Judge José A. Cabranes on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2000 to 2001 and for Chief Judge Michael B. Mukasey on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2000.

Judge Farbiarz received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1999 and his A.B. from Harvard University in 1995. In addition, Judge Farbiarz was a Senior Fellow at New York University School of Law from 2014 to 2016.
