Karin Immergut is currently serving as an American judge on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, a position she has held since her appointment in August 2019. In May 2024, she also took on a new role by joining the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for a seven-year term.
Before moving to the federal judiciary, Judge Immergut spent a decade on the Multnomah County Circuit Court bench in Portland, Oregon, where she handled a variety of criminal and civil matters.
Her legal career in Oregon began as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon from 2003 to 2009. Prior to that, she gained experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in both the District of Oregon from 2001 to 2003 and the Central District of California between 1988 and 1994.
During her tenure as U.S. Attorney, she contributed to the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys, eventually leading the committee from 2004 to 2009. Another notable role in her career was her service with the Office of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, where she worked as an Associate Independent Counsel from May to October 1998.
Her legal journey began as a litigation associate at the Washington, DC firm of Covington & Burling. Karin Immergut completed her undergraduate studies at Amherst College in 1982 and earned a J.D. from the Berkeley School of Law at the University of California in 1987.

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, Judge Karin Immergut enjoined the Trump Administration from federalizing the Oregon National Guard, finding the federalization order to be unlawful. The Trump Administration subsequently sought to circumvent this order by redeploying troops from California, a move that Attorney General Bonta and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield challenged in court on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
“This is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law,” wrote Judge Immergut in a Saturday order rejecting the administration’s claims that it needed military support to protect federal property and enforce immigration law, what she called an “extraordinary measure.”
