Alvin Hellerstein serves as a Senior Judge on the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998, he took over the position previously held by Louis L. Stanton. He has held senior status since January 30, 2011.

Throughout his tenure as a District Judge, Hellerstein has overseen significant cases, including the extensive 9/11 litigation, comprising roughly 13,000 cases, and Freedom of Information Act cases against bodies like the Department of Defense and the CIA concerning Abu Ghraib, along with cases about the renditions and interrogation of enemy combatants.

Hailing from the Bronx and a graduate of Columbia Law School, Hellerstein distinguished himself as an editor of the Law Review. He was a Law Clerk for U.S. District Judge Edmund L. Palmieri from 1956 to 1957. His military service includes a role as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, where he instructed at JAGC School in Virginia and acted as a Trial Lawyer and Legal Counselor in Korea from 1957 to 1960. He then worked at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan from 1960 until his judicial appointment in 1998, co-leading the litigation department.

Beyond his legal work at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, Judge Hellerstein actively engaged in professional and charitable efforts. He was President and later Chairman of the Board of Jewish Education and held roles on the boards of his synagogue, The Jewish Center, the Ramaz School, as well as participated in key committees of UJA-Federation.

He actively participated in professional groups and frequently lectured and wrote for various bar associations, The Practising Law Institution, and the American Law Institute.

Judge Hellerstein graduated with a B.A. from Columbia College in 1954 and earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1956.
