Sajid Akram, a Pakistani-Australian who owned a fruit shop, became embroiled in a tragic and violent event at Bondi Beach, Sydney. As one of the alleged shooters in the attack, Sajid lost his life at the scene. His 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was apprehended during the incident and is currently in police custody at a hospital, where his condition is critical but stable.
Before the horrifying events unfolded, Sajid and Naveed had informed their family they intended to embark on a fishing trip to the South Coast. In a conversation with the Sydney Morning Herald, Naveed’s mother, Verena, shared that they were supposed to spend the weekend at Jervis Bay. Her revelation came amidst the tense atmosphere as police surrounded their residence in Bonnyrigg, located in Sydney’s western suburbs.
The attack, which targeted Sydney’s Jewish community, left a devastating mark. At least 12 individuals were killed, and 29 others sustained injuries, including two police officers, during a Jewish festival celebration. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the assault as a deliberate act against Jewish Australians, labeling it a heinous instance of antisemitism.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon voiced a firm commitment to justice, stating, “No stone will be left unturned. We will be pursuing all individuals associated with the gunmen to ensure the safety of the community.” He further emphasized that such atrocious acts of violence and the senseless loss of innocent lives are utterly intolerable in New South Wales.
