Sam Kaeokon, who is currently participating in MasterChef UK 2025, is an amateur cook and vocational trainer. Originally from Thailand, Sam relocated to the UK in 2014. His main cooking style focuses on genuine Thai cuisine, but he also enjoys mixing Thai flavors with global influences from his travels.
He discovered his passion for cooking early in life, often assisting his mother and grandmother in the kitchen. It was his grandmother who taught him the basics of Thai cooking. Reflecting on his introduction to cooking, Sam explained to the BBC: “Growing up in Thailand was a challenge, which meant I had to learn cooking skills from an early age and make do with limited resources. I frequently helped my mum and grandma, and it was my grandmother who instilled the knowledge of Thai cuisine and sparked my culinary passion.”
He shared a cherished memory of cooking: “While in school, together with my mum and grandma, we won a cooking contest as a team of three. However, my earliest memory is cooking rice over an open fire, resulting in charcoal smudged everywhere and all over my face, though the rice turned out just right!”

Competing on MasterChef UK 2025, Sam is under the scrutiny of judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace. He faces off in the second week of heats along with fellow contestants Aileen, Hazel Coates, Marcella, and Trevor Scarlett.
He shared this exciting step on Instagram, expressing: “I’m excited to reveal that I’ll be taking part in #MasterChefUK this year. Don’t miss it on Wednesday, 13th August at 8 pm on BBC One and @bbciplayer to watch my journey.”
Sam decided to join MasterChef this year to “challenge myself beyond my comfort zone.” He stated: “Before relocating to the UK, I hadn’t known about the show, but now I’m a big fan and have been watching it since my move. For five years, I often told my boyfriend I wanted to sign up but never gathered the courage. Lacking confidence in my culinary skills, I yearned to step outside my comfort zone!”
The MasterChef contestant would love to write a cookbook that celebrates Thailand and his style of cooking. His favourite ingredient to cook with is chilli. He said: “I love spicy food so my favourite ingredient would have to be chilli, closely followed by the perfect jasmine rice. There is nothing more comforting than rice. I grew up eating it every day and it’s my go to. Chilli is the cornerstone of my cooking, however it be used – from a chilli dip with pineapple and unripe mango to the perfect pad-kra-pao (chicken basil).”
