Stephen Miran is an American economist currently serving as the chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. On August 7, 2025, he was appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump to become a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He will succeed Adriana Kugler, a former appointee of President Joe Biden, in the seven-member board led by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.

During the first Trump administration, Miran contributed at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, advising on economic policy under then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He later joined Hudson Bay Capital Management LP, a hedge fund where he worked as a senior strategist.
Federal campaign records display Miran’s financial support for Trump’s re-election. Upon his return to the administration, he has guided efforts at the White House, producing analyses focused on the economic implications of the president’s policies.
Prior to his tenure with the administration, Miran proposed the concept of devaluing the U.S. dollar to enhance the competitiveness of American imports, an idea dubbed the Mar-a-Lago Accord. He also pointed out the financial drawbacks of the dollar’s status as the global reserve currency.
Miran was formerly a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute in New York City. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University, where he was under the supervision of Marty Feldstein, an eminent American economist who was CEA Chair during the Reagan administration. He received a B.A. from Boston University, where he studied economics, philosophy, and mathematics.
