Jeffrey Karp serves as a judge on the Superior Court of Massachusetts, a position he assumed after being appointed by Governor Charlie Baker, a member of the Republican Party, on April 21, 2017. He succeeded The Honorable Richard E. Welch, III in this role.

Before his judicial appointment, Judge Karp practiced law privately in Newburyport starting in 2011. His legal focus included criminal defense, domestic relations, and commercial litigation. This diverse practice provided him with extensive experience in a variety of legal matters.

Earlier in his career, from 2001 to 2012, Karp worked as an associate at the law firm Newman & Newman, P.C. There, he was responsible for advising and representing clients across civil, criminal, and domestic litigation sectors.

Prior to his time with Newman & Newman, Karp was an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, serving from 1995 to 2001. He notably led the Domestic Violence Unit from 1999 to 2001, overseeing all domestic violence case prosecutions in Suffolk Superior Court.

Throughout his legal career, Karp has presided over approximately one hundred trials, dealing with cases ranging from first-degree murder to construction and custody disputes. He launched his career in 1993 as an associate at Morrison, Mahoney & Miller in Boston.

Before entering the legal field, Karp was a Certified Public Accountant and worked as a Senior Accountant at Price Waterhouse in Boston. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earned in 1987, and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law, attained in 1993. Raised in Malden, Karp attended Malden Public Schools.

Judge Karp has served on the Board of Directors of the West Newbury Youth Baseball League since 2014.
