Nikolai Ryzhkov was born on September 28, 1929 in Shcherbynivka, Ukranina SSR, Soviet Union. 

For his education, Nikolai graduated in 1959 from the Ural Polytechnic Institute.

He started working as a welder in the 1970s and then became a chief engineer at the Sverdlovsk Urlamash Plant.

Later, he began his political career in local industry, leading his way through the hierarchy of Soviet Industrial ministries. 

In 1956, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and was transferred to Moscow in 1975.

Ryzhkov was appointed as the First Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Committee in 1979.
