Payton led West Linn High School to four straight state championships and was named Todd Pratt Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
As a junior (2014–15), Payton averaged 22 points and 5.8 assists a game, and as a senior (2015–16), he averaged 23.6 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.1 steals. According to ESPN, Pritchard committed to the University of Oregon Ducks in August 2015 as a four-star prospect.

Payton had previously committed to the University of Oklahoma, where his father, Terry was a football player. Payton scored 45 points in the Northwest Shootout, an all-star game featuring Oregon and Washington players.
Payton was one of the top players in collegiate basketball as a senior. As a senior, Payton was selected Pac-12 Player of the Year after averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game.
He has been named a consensus All-American and received the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s best point guard.
