Chelsea’s afternoon went from bad to worse as they suffered their eighth Premier League defeat of the season against Wolves.

In the first-half Raheem Sterling had a golden opportunity to put the Blues in front after pouncing on a misplaced pass and finding himself in a three-on-one situation heading towards goal.

However, the 29-year-old opted to take the shot rather than pass to either Cole Palmer or Nicolas Jackson beside him, a decision that drew the ire of Blues fans on social media.

Christopher Nkunku netted his first goal for the club since arriving in the summer but it would prove to be in vain as a frustrated Chelsea were unable to find a late equaliser.

Those frustrations were evident during the action with four players booked during normal time.

Sterling was then shown a yellow in stoppage-time as the visitors searched for a second goal before Marcus Bettinelli entered the referee’s book from the bench for dissent.

The substitute goalkeeper’s sanctioning is made more remarkable by the fact that he has never played a Premier League fixture for the Blues and has made just one competitive fixture in all competitions since arriving from Fulham in the summer of 2021.

One of the players cautioned was third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, who has never played a Premier League game for the club

Under FA regulations, any club that receives six or more cautions or dismissals, which includes the dug out area, will be fined.

According to the FA’s disciplinary regulations: ‘The Association will take disciplinary action against a Club if six or more of the Club’s Players are either cautioned or sent off in a Match falling within Category 1 or Category 3.’

As well as Sterling and Bettinelli, Conor Gallagher, Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto and Nicolas Jackson were all cautioned by referee David Coote at Molineux.

Liverpool received the same FA sanction for ill-discipline during their defeat to Tottenham in October and were fined £25,000.
