NEWMAN, Ill. (WCIA) — While Halloween is traditionally about children collecting heaps of candy, one city in Central Illinois is taking a different approach this year, especially in light of the prolonged government shutdown. Newman is focusing on supporting families during this festive time.

In an effort to provide support, the City of Newman is encouraging residents to hand out non-perishable food items to trick-or-treaters instead of just candy.
