Border czar makes surprising admission about ICE agents wearing masks

In a recent revelation, Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, defended the decision for ICE agents to wear masks while on duty in Minnesota, despite his own aversion to the practice. This unexpected stance underscores the complexity of balancing personal views with professional responsibilities.

Homan stood firm on the necessity of masks for the safety of his officers, citing a significant rise in threats and assaults against ICE personnel. He described the Minnesota Metro Surge as a triumph for ICE, highlighting the importance of protective measures in such operations.

In an interview with CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe, Homan candidly expressed, “As far as the mask look, you know I don’t like the masks either. But because threats against ICE officers are up over 1500 percent and actual assaults and threats have surged over 8000 percent, these men and women have to protect themselves.”

Addressing concerns about the agents’ identifiability, Homan assured that all personnel wear visible placards. He countered criticism by suggesting, “There are identifying marks, but masks, you know, why don’t they talk about maybe passing legislation to make it illegal to dox agents or something like that? But the masks right now are for officer safety reasons.”

Homan’s remarks shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by ICE agents and the controversial measures they employ to ensure their safety. His comments invite a broader conversation on how best to protect law enforcement officers in a climate of increasing hostility.

‘There is identifying marks, but masks, you know, why don’t they talk about maybe passing legislation to make it illegal to dox agents or something like that?’ Homan asked. ‘But the masks right now are for officer safety reasons.’

The former immigration officer exampled the director of ICE, Todd Lyons, as a reason for the agents fearing being identified.

‘Just yesterday, the director of ICE, his wife was filmed walking to work,’ he told O’Keefe. ‘His home address has been doxed. His kids have been doxed and filmed.’

‘I don’t know of another agency in this country that has an 8000 percent increase [in threats].’

As he staunchly defended his agents decisions to conceal their identities, Homan praised the work done by ICE during what was dubbed the Metro Surge in Minnesota.

When asked about the winding down efforts of the agency in the sanctuary city, Homan said they would ‘get back to the original footprint.’

‘We already removed well over 1000 people, and as of Monday, Tuesday, we’ll remove several hundred more,’ he said.

‘We’ll get back to the original footprint, with the exception of the agents there to do the fraud investigation, will stay there and continue their work until they’re done.’

‘But there will be a small security force, what we call RFQs, that will respond when our agents are out and they get surrounded by agitators and things got out of control.

‘They’ll remain for a short period of time, just to make sure the coordination, the agreements we have with local state law enforcement, stay in place, and they respond to a public safety threat when needed.’

The border czar, who was missioned with deescalating the tense atmosphere in Minnesota following ICE raids and the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, told the outlet that he hoped that security forces could be removed ‘fairly quickly.’

Homan championed agreements with jails in Minnesota as 'a win,' which allows ICE agents into jails instead of sending 'six or seven people out to look for them'

When asked about the winding down efforts of the agency in the sanctuary city, Homan said they would ‘get back to the original footprint’

‘I’m hoping. I think things are going in the right direction, and I got faith they’ll continue that way,’ he said.

Homan championed agreements with jails in Minnesota as ‘a win,’ which allows ICE agents into jails instead of sending ‘six or seven people out to look for them.’

He hoped that other sanctuary cities would follow in line, and added: ‘If you really want us to focus on the criminals, then let us in the jail. That’s the safest, most secure place to do our work.’

Homan turned his attention to the overall efforts done by ICE during President Donald Trump’s second term, and said: ‘The bottom line is, we have the most secure border in history in this nation.’

‘We got record numbers of criminal aliens arrested and deported in this country because this is one team, one fight. The results speak for themselves.’

Homan’s praises of the agency come as a partial government shutdown, focused on the Department of Homeland Security, began on Saturday.

Disagreements over immigration reform has kept the Democrats and The White House at a stand still.

Among the demands for ICE from the Democrats include requiring body cameras and identification, banning masks, halting racial profiling and mandating judicial warrants for arrests on private property, the outlet reported.

Homan told the outlet that racial profiling is ‘just not occurring,’ and any arrests or questioning is based on ‘reasonable suspicion.’

‘It has nothing to do with racial profiling,’ he said, adding that ICE agents have been ‘acting within the framework of federal statutes.’

Homan told CNN that the shutdown will not affect operations, and said: ‘The immigration mission, the reason why President Trump was elected to be president, continues.’
