A 34-year-old Alabama man has been arrested and charged with robbing and sodomizing two elderly women in their home.

Responding to a burglary call, the Florence Police Department discovered two victims with multiple injuries in a home on late Saturday afternoon. The officers administered first aid until the Florence Fire and Rescue and Lifeguard EMS arrived.

Following the incident, a 79-year-old woman was flown to the University of Alabama-Birmingham hospital, while a 76-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to the North Alabama Medical Center. Both victims were still in the hospital on Sunday morning.

An investigation revealed doorbell camera footage of the suspect leaving the scene, identified as Michael Joe Kirkland Jr. Evidence connecting Kirkland to the burglary, sodomy, robbery, and assault charges was also found leading to his arrest.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and further charges are pending.

Kirkland is being held without bail at the Lauderdale County Detention Center.
