A man from Tennessee allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s townhouse armed with an “AR-style” rifle, concealing himself in her closet before startling her as she slept beside her current boyfriend and their 5-year-old child. Two other children were asleep in a neighboring room at the time of the incident.
Corwyn Winfield, 26, from Memphis, now faces a series of charges, including aggravated assault and domestic assault, following his arrest in Shelby County on Monday, as indicated by court documents related to the October 25 home invasion.
According to an affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, Winfield allegedly concealed himself within his ex-girlfriend’s residence at the Emerald Square Townhomes, located in Memphis’ Hickory Hill area. At the time, six people were present in the home, comprising three children and three adults.
Winfield’s ex-girlfriend and her new partner were roused from sleep by the noise of Winfield, who is the father of the woman’s children, emerging from a closet in their bedroom. The affidavit claims he was armed with a loaded black “AR-style rifle,” which he reportedly fired several times during an altercation with the new boyfriend.
The affidavit details that Winfield “pointed the gun at the couple, threatening to kill them and ordering them not to move.” When the new boyfriend attempted to escape, Winfield blocked his path at the bedroom door, leading to a struggle over the weapon as the boyfriend tried to disarm him.
In response to the commotion, the ex-girlfriend cried out for assistance from the other adults in the house, who were downstairs at the time. During the struggle, the new boyfriend succeeded in dislodging the rifle from Winfield’s grip, causing it to fall to the floor.
“Winfield grabbed the gun … and ran out of the home,” the affidavit says.
Police say Winfield was hit in his arm by a bullet during the mayhem and went to a local hospital to be treated, where officers found him. Another round struck a neighboring townhouse and bedroom occupied by a 10-month-old baby, a 6-year-old, and two 17-year-olds, according to cops.
“[The ex-girlfriend] positively identified Corwyn Winfield as the person responsible for entering her home without permission and hiding in her bedroom closet before pointing a black gun at her and her guest,” the affidavit alleges.
Winfield, who has a history of arrests for domestic violence, is charged with aggravated domestic violence, aggravated child abuse or neglect, reckless endangerment, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, in addition to aggravated assault and domestic assault.
Authorities held Winfield this week on a $400,000 bond, and he was due in court Wednesday. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 12.
