Accused camper killer to learn if bail bid successful
An accused murderer will soon find out if he will be released on bail to live with his son, as he awaits trial for allegedly killing a missing woman.
Greg Lynn applied for bail at Melbourne’s Supreme Court last week, where his lawyers argued he should be released as the prosecution’s case against him was weak.

The fate of a 59-year-old former pilot hangs in the balance as he prepares to face the court on Thursday morning. This pivotal moment comes as the legal proceedings surrounding his case continue to unfold.

He is charged with the murder of Carol Clay, 73, who went missing from a remote campsite in Victoria’s northeast in March 2020, alongside her friend Russell Hill, 74.

Prosecutors have staunchly opposed the granting of bail for the accused, asserting that the evidence against him is robust. They contend that the circumstances do not meet the stringent criteria required for his release on exceptional grounds.

According to Prosecutor Mark Gibson KC, the case centers around a grave accusation: Ms. Clay was allegedly shot in the head with a bullet traced back to the defendant’s firearm. This claim forms a crucial part of the prosecution’s argument.

Maintaining his stance of innocence, the former pilot insists the tragic incident was an accident. His barrister, Dermot Dann KC, pushes for bail, arguing that the prosecution’s case is fraught with weaknesses and specific issues that undermine its credibility.

A central point in the defense’s argument is the acknowledgment that the defendant does not pose an unacceptable risk to public safety. Furthermore, they highlight the challenging conditions he is enduring while in custody, awaiting trial. These factors, they argue, justify his release on bail as the legal process continues.

He said it was accepted that his client did not pose an unacceptable risk to endangering the community, and claimed Lynn faced difficult conditions in custody as he awaited trial.

Any risk Lynn posed could be addressed by “stringent conditions” being applied to his bail, he said.

The accused killer’s son Geordie put forward his “life savings” as a bail guarantor, and offered to accommodate Lynn at his home, the defence barrister said.

Justice David Beach will hand down his bail decision at 9.30am on Thursday.
