Ben Roberts-Smith displays to remain on show at Australian War Memorial
The national institution declared today its their responsibility to “reflect the full story” of Australians at war.

In a move blending reverence with reality, the Australian War Memorial has introduced a new panel beside Ben Roberts-Smith’s celebrated display, addressing his ongoing legal situation. This addition accompanies his uniform, medals, and combat helmet showcased in the esteemed Hall of Valour, a space dedicated to Victoria Cross recipients.

”Roberts-Smith has been charged with five counts of the war crime of murder,” the panel reads.

“The legal process is ongoing,” reads the newly added panel, a reminder of the unfolding narrative surrounding Roberts-Smith. This gesture marks a commitment to transparency while acknowledging the complexities of his current legal challenges.

Matt Anderson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, emphasized the institution’s dedication to conveying the complete story of Australians in war. “Whatever the truth is, whenever the truth is known, we will tell it,” Anderson stated, underscoring the importance of allowing justice to run its course.

An honour earned through his actions in Afghanistan, however, he is now an accused war criminal.

Despite a decade marked by investigations and legal disputes, the war memorial has resisted calls from some quarters to dismantle the Roberts-Smith exhibit. Instead, it has opted to maintain the display, reinforcing its mission to present a comprehensive narrative of Australian military history.

“The most important thing all of us can do now is let justice take its course.”
