On Thursday, authorities in Vermont discovered a body in proximity to the area where a college student had disappeared a week prior.
According to WCAX, the remains were found at The Knoll, a farm in Cornwall owned by Middlebury College. This discovery came during the ongoing search for Lia Smith, a 21-year-old student who was last seen on the Middlebury College campus the previous Friday.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the identity of the deceased and the cause of death. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that there is no indication of foul play, WCAX reported.
Lia Smith, originally from California, is a senior at Middlebury College. Her father reported her missing on Sunday after she failed to respond to calls and messages from friends.
Further information about the circumstances surrounding Smith’s disappearance has not been released.
Reports indicate that a large-scale search operation took place on Wednesday, involving Border Patrol. The FBI, Vermont State Police, and New York State Police are also actively involved in the investigation into Smith’s disappearance.
Police were expected to hold a live conference on Thursday but it was canceled around the time the body was discovered, according to WPTZ.
The Knoll is reportedly located west of Middlebury College.
