A body was found Sunday in the wheel well of an American Airlines plane at North Carolina’s Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
According to a statement by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the body was found after the plane arrived from Europe.
The discovery occurred when workers were conducting maintenance on the aircraft, according to police. The individual’s identity remains unknown, and the cause of death has not yet been determined.
“We are profoundly saddened by this news and are prepared to assist the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) with their investigation as required,” stated Charlotte Douglas International Airport in a statement, reported by CNN.
The airline is currently working with law enforcement.
According to AP News, experts indicated that around “three-quarters of stowaways” die while hiding in an airplane’s undercarriage.
