GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have confirmed that a gunshot was discharged at Kay Jewelers in Oaks Mall earlier today. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Initially detained, the individual turned out to be the victim in this incident.
According to the Gainesville Police Department, a couple was browsing in Kay Jewelers when three men entered the store and attacked the male shopper. In the midst of being knocked down, the victim managed to draw a handgun and fire a shot. Subsequently, all four individuals fled the scene. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office later found the victim a few blocks away, and a handgun was discovered in a nearby drain. The investigation is still ongoing.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office shared on social media that the Alachua County Combined Communications Center received numerous reports from the Oaks Mall about gunfire inside the premises.
Numerous resources from both the Gainesville Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office have responded.
Law enforcement on scene has confirmed that a gunshot was fired inside of the mall, but at this time there are no reported injuries.
GPD later reported that there was no active shooter by the time ASO posted their report about the incident. One person was in custody, and officers were working to identify other potential suspects.
GPD Officers and ASO Deputies are still working to clear the mall of any further threats. Please avoid the area.
