A 6-year-old California boy died after being left inside a vehicle Saturday during record-breaking heat in Paso Robles, authorities confirmed.

Police were notified of the child’s death shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday. Detectives suspect that the boy’s father, 27-year-old Briant Reyes-Estrada, left his vehicle parked at the Paso Robles Inn for several hours before bringing the child to Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton, where he was declared dead, Fox 26 reports.

The temperature reached 99 degrees Fahrenheit in Paso Robles that day.

Police sad the defendant may have been parked at the Paso Robles Inn for numerous hours while leaving his son inside the vehicle.

Hotel employees told KSBY that Reyes-Estrada had worked at the Paso Robles Inn that day.

Reyes-Estrada was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and willful harm or injury to a child likely to cause serious bodily harm, as stated in local media reports.

Anyone with information or anyone in the Paso Robles Inn parking lot on May 10 [until 3:40 p.m.] should call Paso Robles police at 805-227-7455.

The city is about 200 miles up the Pacific Coast from Los Angeles, according to AccuWeather.
