In a startling incident in California, authorities have uncovered a deceptive scheme where a group of individuals misled compassionate drivers by claiming a child’s death and soliciting funds for a funeral that was never needed. This deceit unfolded as the perpetrators displayed images of a child, who police confirmed is indeed alive, aiming to tug at the heartstrings of unsuspecting motorists.

The Palm Springs Police Department released images showing at least three individuals positioned at the bustling intersection of Ramon Road and San Luis Rey Drive in Riverside County. These individuals were seen engaging with drivers, purportedly seeking donations under false pretenses. Following their investigation, police apprehended two suspects involved in this fraudulent activity.

According to the police, these scams are not uncommon. “Scammers continue to use emotionally charged stories to take advantage of good-hearted people,” the department stated. They highlighted that one prevalent method involves displaying signs with children’s photos, falsely claiming the need for help with funeral or medical expenses.

Authorities noted that such operations are often orchestrated, utilizing images that are frequently stolen from legitimate charities or directly sourced from the internet. In this particular case, the scammers brazenly entered the intersection, brandishing photos of a child they alleged had passed away. However, upon investigation, officers confirmed that the child in question was alive and well.

“Officers looked into their story and confirmed the child they claimed was deceased is very much alive,” stated the Palm Springs Police Department. They also acknowledged the prevalence of similar scams, underscoring the importance of vigilance among community members when confronted with such situations.

“Officers looked into their story and confirmed the child they claimed was deceased is very much alive,” Palm Springs PD said. “We know many in our community have encountered similar situations.”

Police urged local residents not to give money to people “stepping into the roadway or standing on medians to solicit cash,” especially while using emotional stories or photos.

“This behavior is unsafe, and many of these operations are fraudulent,” the department said. “If you come across this type of activity in Palm Springs, call our non-emergency line.”

The individuals who were arrested are both from Redlands and they face charges of obtaining money by false pretenses and conspiracy to commit a crime.
