An Illinois college student who vanished late last month remains missing even after his girlfriend — who also disappeared — was found dead on Tuesday.

CBS reported that Natally Brookson, 22, was found deceased in Lake Michigan. Brookson and her boyfriend, Daniel Sotelo, 26, who are both students at the University of Illinois – Chicago, vanished on April 30, but Sotelo remains unaccounted for.

An autopsy performed on Brookson the following day was inconclusive, meaning it is unclear how she died. WFLD reported that Brookson was last seen working at Friedman Place, a housing community for blind adults.

The university confirmed to CBS that Brookson had withdrawn from the spring semester. Sotelo’s graduation ceremony occurred last weekend.

Sotelo was also last seen on April 30, on a CTA train at the Roosevelt ‘L’ stop. WFLD reported that his roommate had dropped him off at the station. Sotelo allegedly told his roommate that he was heading up north but he did not elaborate.

According to CBS, Brookson is the fifth person to be found dead in Lake Michigan or the Chicago River in a two-week span.

Chicago police have not yet confirmed whether Brookson and Sotelo’s disappearances are connected.
