A Colorado woman has been charged with first degree murder after allegedly stabbing her mother to death in an argument.
On September 28, police discovered Sarah Riste, 37, and a young child sitting outside their Westminster residence after she dialed 911, as reported by the Denver Post. Riste informed the officers about an “accident” and allowed them inside, where they found 64-year-old Kathy Johnson’s body hidden under some blankets in the hallway.
Police said they saw a large amount of blood on the walls.
According to an affidavit, police observed Riste yelling at the child, instructing them to remain silent. She had visible blood on her shirt and hands, as noted in the affidavit.
In a subsequent interview, Riste explained that she had argued with her mother, and due to years of emotional mistreatment, she resorted to grabbing a knife from the kitchen when their confrontation turned physical.
The affidavit revealed that the child informed investigators with a statement resembling: “mom stabbed grandma, mom is going to jail, grandma is dead and now I don’t have anyone.”
Westminster Police said the child was turned over to Child Protective Services.
