COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Two Commerce City police officers and two Adams County firefighters were struck by a suspected impaired driver while investigating a separate DUI crash Thursday evening.

Both Commerce City police officers that were hit are expected to be OK, according to the Commerce City Police Department. One South Adams County firefighter got a minor injury in the crash. Another firefighter was seriously injured, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

The initial crash happened on westbound Interstate 76 near MP 13, according to Commerce City police. A firetruck was blocking two lanes of traffic, but drivers could pass westbound on the right shoulder. The four first responders involved in the crash were in one of the closed lanes near a Commerce City patrol car, when the second suspected impaired driver drove on the left shoulder around the firetruck onto the closed lane hitting the four first responders.

Commerce City police said the allegedly impaired driver drove through police barricades and struck two officers and two firefighters. All four first responders were taken to the hospital.

The driver who struck the first responders was arrested, according to Commerce City police. The suspect was booked into the Adams County jail and is being investigated for driving under the influence, according to CSP.

There will be a news briefing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Commerce City Police Department to provide more details on the crash, CSP said.

CSP is investigating the crash.
