In Indiana, two parents are facing charges after taking their 2-month-old son to the hospital with 11 fractured ribs and bleeding from the eyes. They reportedly tried to attribute these injuries to the baby being “gassy” and having a car seat that was too tight, as stated by authorities.

Lindsey Davis, 34, and MacQuell Davis Jr., 30, have both insisted they were unaware of their son’s injuries prior to their revelation through X-rays and medical examinations, according to a report from the local ABC affiliate WEHT, which cites information from police and the Department of Child Services officials.

Evansville Police say the 2-month-old was taken to a hospital on April 21 for his alleged gas and was kept there for several days. His injuries appeared to have been suffered approximately one week before he arrived, per WEHT.

Police say the child had fractured five ribs on his right side, six on his left.

Lindsey Davis allegedly admitted to investigators that she spotted blood in the boy’s eyes about a week before taking him in, but she kept him at home and didn’t do anything to address it. Two other children were said to be living with the couple at the time, and Lindsey Davis allegedly told police one of them had also experienced similar symptoms when they were younger and was fine.

According to EPD officials, Lindsey Davis claimed during her police interview that she believed her son’s injuries could have been caused by his car seat being too tight.

MacQuell Davis has denied having knowledge of any drops or accidents involving the child. A medical report for the infant listed his injuries as being inflicted or the result of physical abuse.

Charges have been filed against both parents for neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. They are being held on $25,000 bonds at the Vanderburgh County Jail. Their children have been placed in the care of a family member.
