A cruise ship crew member stabbed another crew member Thursday night then leapt overboard near the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the incident occurred in the maritime vicinity of San Salvador Island on the Royal Caribbean vessel Icon of the Seas, as WTVJ covered.
Police said the suspect, a 35-year-old man, stabbed a 28-year-old woman multiple times. Both were from South Africa.
The man fled and jumped overboard. Rescuers later found him unresponsive and brought him back onboard, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
The woman was stabbed multiple times in the upper body and was said to be in stable condition.
“Our onboard security team responded to an altercation between two crew members over a personal dispute. One crew member sustained injuries, received care from the onboard medical team, and is now in stable condition,” stated Royal Caribbean. “Sadly, the other crew member has passed away after going overboard, with his body recovered during a search and rescue effort.”
The ship was on its way from Miami to the Bahamas when the incident took place. It is expected back in Miami on Saturday.
