A distressing incident unfolded in Kentucky as a woman allegedly shot her mother multiple times and then reached out to 911 for assistance.
Brianna Rich, aged 27, faces murder charges following the tragic death of her 50-year-old mother, Carol Rich. According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the home in London, Kentucky, which the two women shared, after reports of a shooting on the evening of March 14, 2025. It was Brianna Rich herself who called 911, reportedly telling dispatchers, “I just shot at my mother.”
Local news outlet WDKY reports that during the 911 call, Brianna Rich allegedly confessed to shooting her mother approximately five times following a physical confrontation. She was quoted saying, “I’m holding blankets on her wounds, and she doesn’t have a pulse. There’s a lot of blood.”
When asked by the dispatcher about the events leading up to the shooting, Brianna claimed her mother “came at me, trying to hurt me and choke me. It’s been going on for a while now. I haven’t been able to go out of the house.”
First responders discovered Carol Rich outside the residence, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members shared with CBS affiliate WKYT that Brianna had been living with her mother while trying to overcome a drug issue, which reportedly resurfaced after two years of sobriety.
In an interview with WDKY, Brianna Rich’s older sister, Bridgett Rich, said the fatal shooting was not the first time her sister tried to kill her mother. Bridgett Rich told WDKY that her younger sister “tried to stab” Carol Rich several years ago, but was stopped by her mother’s boyfriend at the time.
Brianna Rich was charged with murder and remains in custody at the Laurel County Correctional Center. WDKY reported that she was ordered on Tuesday to undergo an inpatient competency examination. Her next court hearing was scheduled for June 1.
