A day care employee in South Carolina was arrested for a “disturbing” attack on a child at a Christian preschool, authorities said.

On Thursday, 75-year-old Gladys Rampersant was taken into custody and faced charges of unlawful conduct towards a child, as announced by the North Charleston Police Department. The incident allegedly took place in July.

“North Charleston Police Department’s Special Victims Unit detectives have apprehended a daycare worker regarding a child abuse case, involved in an alleged assault on a child,” stated the police department.

During the incident, Rampersant was employed at Sweetgrass Christian Academy on Remount Road in North Charleston. Reports suggest she was responsible for a baby — under one year old — and purportedly lifted the infant by the arms, shook them violently, and then “slammed” the child into a crib.

The suspect went back to the baby, pulling them out of their crib and hitting them on the head several times, local CBS affiliate WCSC reported.

Rampersant was held at the Al Cannon Detention Center with a bond reportedly set at $15,000, but she was released on bond a few hours post-arrest. According to court documents, her next court date is scheduled for October 31.

A number of social media accounts for Sweetgrass Christian Academy have been taken down, and a Google search indicates the daycare is “permanently closed.” Its website states that it had its grand opening on July 26.

Charleston is located just southeast of North Charleston, with the former located on the coast in the southeast of the state.
