A Louisiana man has been indicted for allegedly stabbing his mother – a beloved local teacher – several times as she slept.

Connor Lyons, aged 19, was charged with second-degree murder by a Caddo Parish grand jury on Wednesday, related to the death of Lara Lyons, 55. Additionally, he faced charges for the alleged battery of a police officer and for resisting arrest, as stated by the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office announced.

The involvement of law enforcement in the incident stems from a disturbing call in May. According to Shreveport CBS affiliate KSLA, it was Connor Lyons’ sibling who dialed 911 to report the crime.

“My brother killed my mother,” the caller reportedly stated on May 23. Upon arrival at the family’s house on the 6000 block of Double A Drive in Shreveport, Louisiana, Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies found Connor Lyons behind the house.

Inside the house, deputies found Lara Lyons lying in her bed — dead.

Connor Lyons was taken into custody and sent to the Caddo Correctional Center, the sheriff’s office reported at the time. Reports indicate he confessed to stabbing his mother three times in the neck while she slept, claiming to have been hearing voices.

Connor Lyons has been at the Caddo Correctional Center since May 23, and he remains there on a $2 million bond.

Lara Lyons was described days after her death as a “beloved” Mansfield High School teacher in the DeSoto Parish public school district.

“Ms. Lyons was a devoted educator, a compassionate colleague, and a valued part of the DeSoto Parish Schools family,” the district expressed in a statement. “Her dedication to her students and her passion for teaching impacted many lives, and her absence will be deeply mourned throughout our school community.”

Shreveport is located in northwestern Louisiana, about 200 miles east of Dallas, Texas.
