Thieves have made off with thousands of dollars worth of luxury items in a ramraid of a David Jones shop in Melbourne.
Police say thieves rammed the rear roller door of the David Jones store on Bourke Street and swiped thousands of dollars worth of luxury handbags before fleeing in a white Lexus.
It’s the fourth high-end store to be targeted in a month in the city.
Retail theft in Victoria has jumped by almost 90 per cent in the past year, costing businesses an estimated $9 billion.
Retailers are pushing for more police resourcing and strengthened laws.
“Unfortunately, for those CBD retailers that have been hit, time and time again, not just with retail crime, but also just lower foot traffic,” Fleur Brown from the Australian Retailers Association said.
“There’s no one silver bullet, but we do need to see all of those areas addressed.
“We’re in discussions with the Victorian government about doing more.”
