In Michigan, a woman is accused of shooting a man who was bothering her six times and then mocking him while on a call with 911. She later told police that she would have continued shooting his toes and fingers if she had not run out of bullets, according to prosecutors.
Darnisha Sanders, 32, is facing charges including assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm in a building causing injury, and using a firearm during a felony, as noted in online court records. The 42-year-old man allegedly shot by Sanders was critically injured with shots to his head and body and is currently hospitalized, according to MLive.com. His identity has not been disclosed by authorities.
The incident reportedly occurred early Sunday morning, with officers arriving at Sanders’ residence on the 1200 block of Maple Street in Saginaw around 3:30 a.m. Police say Sanders called 911 after shooting the man and was overheard by a dispatcher ridiculing him, as reported by MLive.com.
During the 911 call, Sanders claimed that the man had been harassing her, prompting her to shoot, as stated by local prosecutors. She mentioned that she ran out of bullets during the incident and would have continued firing if she hadn’t. One bullet was still in the man’s head when he was taken to the hospital.
“My child has been part of an abusive situation since 2017,” reads a Facebook post and a GoFundMe page created by a woman named Evelyn Burkes, identifying herself as Sanders’ mother. “I am seeking help with finding a defense attorney and covering her bond in relation to this domestic abuse case that escalated into self-defense.”
Police say they recovered the handgun that Sanders allegedly used, which is registered in her name, per MLive.com. She allegedly said several times while being taken into custody and transported by cops that she wished she hadn’t run out of ammo, while also making fun of the victim for crying.
Sanders was arraigned Tuesday in Saginaw County. Her bond was reportedly set at $500,000 after prosecutors told the judge that Sanders “showed no remorse [and] instead she made fun of the victim’s condition.”
Sanders is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 10 for a preliminary examination conference and on Oct. 14 for her preliminary hearing. She was still behind bars Wednesday.
