An apparent security breach occurred at South Australia’s largest correctional facility when a drone reportedly delivered a package to an inmate.
Sources have informed 9News that the drone entered the airspace above Adelaide’s Yatala Prison around 8 p.m. the previous evening.
The device is said to have hovered outside the third floor of the prison’s B division, where an inmate allegedly reached out through a barred window to collect the delivery.
In response to the incident, the South Australian Department for Correctional Services confirmed an unauthorized attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison.
Prison staff acted swiftly, successfully securing evidence related to the breach, according to the department.
The matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
9News was told officers uncovered a concealed mobile phone, with a battery and charger, in an inmate’s cell.
They also seized a glass pipe and illegal drugs during the search.
The inmate at the centre of the incident is believed to have been moved to the ultra-secure G division.
Police are investigating how the drone flew into prison airspace and who was flying it. `
