When Miranda Corsette loses both parents, she moves in with her grandmother in Gulfport, Florida.
Her grandmother is delighted to see the teenager getting ready for a Valentine’s Day outing. Later, Miranda’s demeanor indicates she had a wonderful evening. Unknown to her grandmother, Miranda didn’t meet with another teen but actually spent the night with 37-year-old Steven Gress.
At 3:41 a.m. the following morning, Miranda discreetly leaves her house and takes an Uber to Gress’ home, which he shares with 35-year-old Michelle Brandes. The couple is known to neighbors and police for frequent intense arguments that often turn violent. St. Petersburg police have been called to their duplex seven times this year.
Miranda stays several days with the couple, ignoring anxious messages from her family. Nine days later, on February 24, her grandmother files a missing person report. Family members use social media to spread the word, noting Miranda was last seen getting into an Uber early on February 15. Her loved ones worry since it’s unusual for her to be out of touch for this long.
On February 25, St. Petersburg police respond to another welfare check requested by Gress and Brandes’ upstairs neighbor. When officers arrive, neither Gress nor Brandes is home. Their landlord provides police with Gress’ phone number, and over the phone, Gress grants permission for them to enter. Officers find nothing unusual inside.
