A young woman from Kentucky, aged 18, is facing serious charges after allegedly fabricating a story about being sexually assaulted in a Walmart bathroom. The incident, reported earlier this month, prompted a significant police investigation. On Tuesday, authorities arrested Autumn L. Tomlin, charging her with one count of felony false reporting.

“Claims of this kind require careful and thorough investigation to maintain the integrity of the inquiry and ensure public safety,” the Glasgow Police Department stated. “Most sexual assault reports we handle involve genuine victims and crimes. False allegations can harm other victims’ willingness to report their experiences and can erode public trust, as well as misallocate critical emergency resources.”

The department’s news release detailed that on February 4, officers responded to a Walmart Supercenter on Happy Valley Road after receiving a report of a sexual assault purportedly occurring in the store’s restroom. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit joined patrol officers in launching an immediate and comprehensive investigation.

The police department emphasized that they approached the sexual assault allegation with the gravity it warranted.

However, as the inquiry continued, authorities uncovered both digital and physical evidence contradicting Tomlin’s account. Details of what led investigators to deem her claims false have not been disclosed.

The police also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information and rumors on social media platforms.

“Inaccurate information can cause unwarranted fear, public outrage, and unfairly discredit the professionalism and training of responding officers who are following the protocols in place to investigate allegations in their totality,” the release said.

Tomlin was transported and processed at the Hart County Jail on Tuesday and released on Wednesday, according to the county sheriff’s office website. She is currently scheduled to appear in court for her arraignment on March 16, per court records.
